Verne's classic story about a scientist, his friends, and their imprisonment and fantastic voyage on a submarine run by a man and his crew who have forsaken the laws of men.

The story isn't very deep, meaning that it's not going to be difficult to get the meaning from unlike certain other classic books. Though social commentary is the driving ambition behind the plot.

Without any depth this book remains a classic just because it's such a great tale. Parts of it are extremely dry, because Verne likes to display his scientific know-how by disapearing into a half page explanation on several different types of fish and zoophytes.

Disregarding this the story is fantastic, if seemingly impersonal. I actually found myself sad and worried and stressed in certain near-death incidents in the book. I also cried for captain Nemo.

I suggest everyone read this book, I mean seriously, it's only $5 at barnes and nobles.

The story is amazing and incredibly advanced for the times he wrote it.

I was dissapointed though.

Multiple semi-giant squids instead of one giant squid?

I need to read the Mysterious Island now.

"And does it not have a parrot like beak?"
"Why yes Conseil, how come"
"Because if this is not _____'s squid than it is certainly one of it's relatives."

I totally saw it coming.

I read it in 6th grade, and still remember every bit of it. It's far above average.

Jules Verne is a fine author, but I've always been more of an H.G. Wells person, myself.

Funny you mentioned that. I had the choice of either this or Journey to the Center of the Earth, and I picked this! I do not regret my choice either. I skimmed the cliffnotes when the movie came out, and it's not as good, but not awful. =/
