Alright ! I've joined www.11secondclub.com 's competition for this month and heres my progress so far, the first key pose for both characters, could you please try and tell me what you think about them ? About their personalities, feelings, if this scene is easy to read etc :) Thanks !

The poses are great, and you can tell who's turn it is. But, please, please. Do not insult chess; Make real pieces.

You can't tell which piece is which if they're all the same flat thing.

I can't wait to see it animated though. Reminds me of that Pixar short of the old man playing chess against himself.

Thanks !
Im happy you like them :) and these are not really chess, its some kind of old antient game that no one really knows, just me, are you okay with that ?

Im not a modeler, Im a animator, I dont want to be too much distracted by the modeling, cause its not really important for me, now :D I hope you wont mind it like it is =)

The guy on the right looks perfect but the blank stare on the guy on the left looks a little bit off

Sexy as. Although Tawnik, I think you should render it instead of doing that quick thing. Especially when it is just a single frame. Make sure you get all the lights and shit set up. Also, did you move around their facial features? Would show better emotion.

I'm having trouble using rigs. Do you have any tutorials for using rigs in 3dsm and maya?

PS: Joined 11secondclub, sounds awsome.

Well you just have to get used to it Cronos, theres no actual tutorial about it (or I havent used any) well, there is ! Try to find your rig on youtube, for example I'd type "Norman rig overview" there should be people showing how they use that, basically you should see some curves around your rig, just clickem them and then rotate them and some can be moved, there are 2 ways how to move hands and arms, IK and FK, one controls just the foot (if talking about legs), you're given a box around a foot (usually) and you're supposed to move it around and the knee will automatically get to some position and theres also some tiny controler near by, for the knee, it "looks" at the controler, so if you move the controler the knee should rotate, its hard to explain for me, as an not native english speaker, but just watch some tutorials about FK and IK animations, rig overviews and you'll get there.

Facials, I dont want them to be the same for the entire animation, I want basic shape of the head right now, I will do them at the end of the process, I just dont want to be bothered by it right now =)
Rendering, this is a render, I just dont feel like adding this stuff because of one frame, its just a quick "sketch" that I wanted people to comment and give me some tips, I dont want the "details" to be losen in the shadows etc, altough, I think I added some area light, or not ? idk now :D

Thanks for the comment ;)

Not to insult or anything, but it looks like the guy on the right is staring at the guy on the left's cajones.
Other than that if you tell yourself that that's not what's going on, it's great so far. :)

What is a "cajone" ? :) And you'd definitely see that hes looking at the chess board, if the camera wasnt rotated away from his eyes..

K, Ima just say what I think is happening:

Guy on the left is thinking on what he should do, trying to think on how he would win the game.

Guy on the right, he seems to be having two, maybe even three, emotions at the same time ! It makes it look as if he has no emotion at all. Maybe move the eyebrows a bit, change the lip structure (smiling, sad, bored, w/e) :3

Its rly nice, can't wait to see it ompletely finished (especially the guy on left (:)

Rabstar, I said that theres no facial animation =D

Blocking pass, means that there are just poses, no inbetween animation, thats why it looks like its lagging

:) Thanks for the help. Before reading this reply, I was trying to figure it out, and I have grown quite comfortable with the Dee rig for 3dsm. I also just figured out how to use the controllers and facial controlls (which seams pretty awsome to me). Only thing I cant figure out how to do on the Dee rig is moving the fingers, there doesnt seam to be a controller or an extra tool for them.

I'm also going to practice facial expressions and lip syncing and try to match it to the 11secondclub december audio.

Cronos, Np, this is how to use the fingers for Norman, my rig (I didnt make it but I use it)

http://filebox.me/files/xs6gue6ew_howto.png
You have to select the finger controler (or any other that seems to be there for this reason, maybe wrist controler, idk) and then look at your option box, or whatever is in max.. =) or just google, "3ds Max Max rig fingers" ;)

Miccool, what ?

He says good day which means he's leaving... but he walks back to the table. The contradiction is what I was pointing out.

Tawnik

Well, it doesnt seem to me like hes walking away, I think he should be running toward him, hmm, I guess it depends on the personality of the speaker, if hes really angry he should do what mine does and if hes just annoyed he should just continue doing what he was doing and just say that :)

Very nice, its coming along nicely.

Also, is there a way I can learn your method of animation. I go straight into it, while you make the main poses first. How did you learn that?

The only thing I see it that the cigar starts floating when his hand moves, but I'm sure you probably already fixed that. Other than that, I loved it and cannot wait to see more.

or watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn_UFTBAhDg you should try to recreate some animations, so you can use them as guides ;)

Yes, the cigar isnt fixed yet, but its easy to do it, dont worry I will take care of that ;)

Thanks.

lolz, it's coming along great. Kinda weird how the guy on the right bends over near the end though. Looks like his head goes through the table o.o

Rocking on !

When the guy that said "Good day" Turns back to shout at him again, the step looks unrealistic, and looks more like a slide.

And the bend down DOES look weird. His head DOES got through the table. If you made him pick the pieces up off the floor, and avoid the table, it would be good.

Well, I thought you're gonna notice and realize that the animation is "done" just to 201st frame, then theres just one big mess =) I thought I left a note about that on youtube, dunno why it dissappeared :(
