View Full Version : Scrolling Signatures! [Flash][Actionscript]

09-09-2005, 08:17 PM
Okay, a lot of people have asked about how do i make my signature scroll. Until now it has been a secret because i wanted to do a business with them ^_^. Well, now I don't care as much because you are the people who know what you want your signature to do so yeah, this tutorial is for you. I tried to make this as in depth as possible but you need to know that i made my signature with Flash MX 2004 Professional and that the scroll bar with be very different looking if you just have MX. So, with that in mind if you still want a scrolling signature like mine don't be afraid to ask.

To guide you thought the process of making a scrolling signature i'm going to guide you on how to make mine. So this will include how to make buttons link to website in your signature too. Hope you enjoy this and feel free to hit the rep button. ^_^ Once you know how to make one the possiblilities are limitless. Hope you enjoy the in depth tutorial.

Steps to making a scrolling signature:

Step 1: Open up a new document.

Step 2: Go to File > Import > Import to Library

Step 3: Import all 4 items for my signature into the Library.

Step 4: Click on "paperclipsig6rt" and drag it onto the stage.

Step 5: Highlight the image and go to properties.

Step 6: Copy down the width and height properties of the image.

Step 7: Add ten to the width for the addition of the verticle scroll bar. View Image... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/7122/widthandhieghtunderproperties3.png)

Step 8: Now go to document settings and put in the new demensions for the image size.

Step 9: Click okay and you should have a stage the size of my image plus a little extra width for the verticle scroll bar.

Step 10: Now press Ctrl + K to get the alignment panel up. Alignment Panel Image... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/9345/alignment2nr.png)

Step 11: Now, "align horizontal center" and "distribute vertical center" to get my image to be perfectly centered on the stage.

Step 12: Next go to the Library and drag out onto the stage "paper1qn".

Step 13: Align paper1qn under the big image and make sure there is an equal spacing on both sides.

Step 14: Next pull out the "flashmx_user" and position it under the paper1qn image. Again making sure it is equal on both sides.

Step 15: And finally drag out the last image, "msnuser0ws" and posistion it under the flashmx_user.

Step 16: Now that we have it so that all our images are positioned equally time to add the credits.

Step 17: Click the text tool and select the font "Trebuchet MS", make sure it's color is black and the font size is 14. View Text Settings... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/2769/textproperties3nt.png)

Step 18: Type the message, "Credit to Areks and KizZ for the user bars!".

Step 19: Then type in another text box, "Credit to Paperclip for the Scrolling Signature"

Step 20: For my signature i wanted it to be helpful and add links to my tutorial to do this you need to make a couple of text buttons. I used the same font but changed the color to blue.

Step 21: Once you make the button you will need to do a bit of action scripting. The code used for making the buttons link to a webpage or website is this:

on (release) {
geturl("http://www.awebsite.com (http://www.awebsite.com/)");

Suggestions for your scrolling signatures. You might have noticed that because the signature can be scrollabe you will have blank white space where there is no picture or text so i suggest that you also pick out a backround to put on a layer as your backround. This will make your signature more colorful depending on what you put behind everything and it will make everything look nicer. No blank space...^_^

Step 22: Now once you have finished your whole signature you will need to conver the whole thing to a movieclip.

Step 23: Name the movieclip "Signature" w/o the quotes.

Step 24: Click on the advance tab or advance options and check the box that says "Export for Actionscripting". View image... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/2820/converttosymbolandlinking2zw.png)

Step 25: Make sure the name you put in that box is the same as the name of your movieclip.

Step 26: Now, delete your movieclip that is on the stage.

Step 27: Go to Windows > Designer Panels > Components

Step 28: Open up the Components Window and Go to UI Database. View Components List... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/2853/components2th.png)

Step 29: Scroll down the list and drag out onto the stage the item named "Scroll Pane".

Step 30: Highlight the Scroll Pane and press Ctrl + V to get the align options up.

Step 31: Do the same thing you did to the images and align the Scroll Pane to the document.

Step 32: Next align it so that the Scroll Pane matches the height and the width of the document. (The 2 buttons on the bottom left, last row.)

Step 33: Highlight the Scroll Pane and go to Properties.

Step 34: Click on "Peramiters" and go to the top cell that says "contentPath". View Peramiter Image... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/3355/parameters8oz.png)

Step 35: Type in "signature" and then type in "signature" again for the Scroll Panes Component Name.

Step 36: Test your movie and see if everything in your "signature" movieclip works.

Step 37: If neccessary you can turn off the horizontal scrolling by going to paremeters and looking for hscrollPolicy > and turn it off. View hscrollPolicy Image... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/2886/hscrollpolicy4ny.png)

Step 38: Export your new signature and password protect just in case.

Step 39: Upload it and post it in your signature.

Step 40: Just so i could get to an even number ^_^

Hope this has helped. If it is still confusing please pm me and i'll will explain it as best as i can. Hope you enjoy you days.

Upload at www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) , www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us) , www.zodm.com (http://www.zodm.com) and do the swf tag options for your signature...

09-10-2005, 06:52 AM
thanx, rep for you paperclip.

WOW! mine came out really tiny. lol

09-10-2005, 02:13 PM
Added some images to help you guys understand...

09-10-2005, 04:04 PM
You ROCK pp! Reppeh reppeh! Youre too nice -.- need to be a little more mean..

09-11-2005, 05:55 PM
Made only some sense you need alot more pictures like where to position it I
don't know what your talking about when you say "go to properties and click

I can't see any parameters

09-12-2005, 04:06 PM
Obviously you don't understand your way around flash because it is the easiest thing to do. Everyone else got it. Click on properties and click the tab that says parameters. That's it.

09-12-2005, 04:37 PM
PP, think u should add buttons for the users to take and try on their own, otherwise they wont know how to make the buttons or the scroll bar, just a thought man :P (u really dont need the scrollbar but w/e)

09-12-2005, 04:45 PM
There is another tutorial i wrote on how to make buttons and program buttons. To bad if they don't know how.

09-12-2005, 07:00 PM
what flash are you using?

I'm using MX 2004...

I'll even post a screen shot if you want me too

EDIT: Don't worry I found it....

but why do you delete your images and stuff?

EDIT2: And also you said to add 10 pixels to this image...

and then when you change the size of box to fit it then there is no room for the
scroll bar >_>

lol it's extremely confusing

need more pictures

09-12-2005, 07:06 PM
No, i said add 10 more to the width of the document...

09-12-2005, 07:37 PM
actually i figured that bit out on my own...

maybe you need to reword it or something

btw here's what I got i do not know what went wrong

bleh tags are stupid there you go

09-18-2005, 12:13 PM
Ugh... anybody having problems using them? Either mine looks like this:
or it looks like my sig (never loads), which I added height"x" and width"x" for.

09-18-2005, 12:17 PM
you have spelled either the height or width wrong so yours is to small. But it does load i see it right now.

09-18-2005, 12:35 PM
Well, what I meant was that the one in my message is the regular version... raw SWF tags. I cannot seem to be able to load the one that is in my sig; the one with (correctly spelled) height and width tags in the SWF tag.

09-18-2005, 12:40 PM
What are you demensions? See if i can do it and then tell you what's wrong.

09-18-2005, 12:44 PM
Ninja-9 says:

Very good tutorial. Will help many ninja with their stealthy sigs. Good work. I shall, as you people say, "rep".

09-18-2005, 02:27 PM

09-18-2005, 03:11 PM

New code that you should have:

[SWF="http://www.imagecabin.com/images/cuy77709.swf height=150 width=460"]http://www.imagecabin.com/images/cuy77709.swf[/*SWF]

Remove the big * to make the code work...

09-18-2005, 06:55 PM
THANK YOU... well, it should work with my Photobucket thing, too, right? 'Cause I'm gonna update it soon. Again, great tutorial. w00t!

11-12-2005, 06:56 AM
yay! mine finally worked. i couldnt figure out how to put the dimensions. yay

11-19-2005, 03:15 AM
can somebody make me a downloadable fla file instead ?

11-19-2005, 04:45 AM
I just can't... i recently cleaned my computer and deleted the original fla. document of this. I'm really sorry but you just need to follow the instructions. They are very clear and detailed so yeah.

12-11-2005, 12:39 PM
i give up way to confusing for me =\ could i send you what i want in the scrolling sig and yo make it =)

Edit:ok well umm when i save it all it does is show the outline of the scroll pane window wtf

01-12-2006, 04:50 PM
I got a problem. It says to look for windows... then panes or something, I CANT FIND THE PANES THING!!! Its like the 30th instruction, right after you delete the movie clip. Plz help.

01-12-2006, 04:55 PM
Step 27: Go to Windows > Designer Panels > Components

Step 28: Open up the Components Window and Go to UI Database. View Components List... (http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/2853/components2th.png)

Step 29: Scroll down the list and drag out onto the stage the item named "Scroll Pane".

Step 30: Highlight the Scroll Pane and press Ctrl + V to get the align options up.

Dude that is as clear as rain.
Windows is on your freakin menu options.

01-12-2006, 05:32 PM

01-12-2006, 07:42 PM
Re upload image... can't see it.

01-13-2006, 01:11 AM

There's already a freaking Components option on there.

I seriously think you need glasses.

01-14-2006, 09:24 AM
hw do u put the flash in your sig ive uploaded it and the pic works, it just keeps coming up with a white box and red cross :S

nevermind i figured out.

04-07-2006, 06:59 AM
Nice. I don't think I'll ever use it, since I'll never have that much stuff to put in, but good tut anyway.

04-18-2006, 11:10 AM
its a good tut but 1 thing u got wrong it's ment to be...

on (release) {

04-18-2006, 01:43 PM
its a good tut but 1 thing u got wrong it's ment to be...

on (release) {

No, i'm not wrong... the way i put it is just to open a window that is all ready open. The added "_blank" just opens a new window. It accomplishes the same thing.

04-19-2006, 03:23 AM
oh does that go for flash 8 to...because i tried and nothing happened

04-20-2006, 01:51 AM
how do u make video's i know its nothing to do with this thread but no one answers it so...

04-20-2006, 04:19 AM
oh does that go for flash 8 to...because i tried and nothing happened

Yeah, it does... you just have to have an internet window open...

And i'm not going to answer your question in MY thread.

06-14-2006, 03:37 PM
that one link doesn't work... :)
but nice tut, if that one link will work, this'll be awesome :D
can't wait

06-14-2006, 04:43 PM
how do you put a swf in your sig?

I use putfile

06-14-2006, 05:39 PM
theres tut at the begining of the flash tut section:D
like me sig?

10-10-2006, 07:38 PM
Step 3: Import all 4 items for my signature into the Library.

Step 4: Click on "paperclipsig6rt" and drag it onto the stage.

This is the part i dont get. what four images and wear is paperclipsig6rt??

10-10-2006, 07:41 PM
It was a part of the file I was allowing people to download so they could come up with the same signature I did for myself. The link has thus died and so those steps are now pointless.

For you to apply it to yourself.. just choose images you want in your scrolling signature and import those into the library.

10-10-2006, 07:43 PM
ok ill try but if i dont get it ill repost oh and does it matter whether im using the trial version or not?

10-11-2006, 04:23 AM
No, trial version is fine... all the features are there.

classic cool
04-13-2007, 10:11 AM
wat do u mean a scroling sig?

04-14-2007, 04:56 AM
It would be like having a scroll bar attached to a certain dimension of your signature. That way you can make your signature as long as you want and it won't break the signature rules because the size of the actual file is the same.

06-21-2007, 12:25 AM
where can i get the stuff for your sig??? or what kind of files do i need if they expired or somthing

06-21-2007, 07:55 AM
bad bump.

don't bump old threads.

09-08-2007, 11:10 PM
i dont understand. i have this toy 60$ cheap flash and i cant do any special effect or anything. does anyone know what im talking about?

09-18-2007, 02:24 PM
I know this is an old thread, but there's something missing from it. I don't know if it's a template or something.

09-22-2007, 02:58 PM
It is the example file. I haven't bothered to upload another one. You don't need it to make one though, just follow the instructions putting in your own files for mine.
