View Full Version : smoke/bomb tutorial[Easytoon][FX]

ok, well, it looks like the other tutorials here arent worthy of ass rape. so heres some stuff worth thinking about.

this is an explosion. a smoke bomb. it goes through a number of stages.
firstly, an effective bomb should have a start sequence, shown here with a bit of sparks flying out of the top. secondly, smoke doesnt just grow, it has to expand, like here. it is enveloping from the bomb.
thirdly, after wards, this goes for all smoke, it doesnt just shrink.... you idiots that shrink smoke are just lazy. it dissapates like so. smoke thats been around for the longest will go the first.

now to make it.

begin with just a simple ball or object thrown or dropped.

next it lights, to do this you can either draw a whisp of smoke or random sparks flying out.

then it explodes, smoke begins to build up and just folds over itself. and it grows like so.

finally, when either the whole screen is filled or the pit or whatever you want is filled (remember, smoke wont just stay in an area, its heavier than air so it will either dissapate or fill a place up.) it should then dissapate, as i said before, start with where the smoke has been for a while, and work slowley.

The example actually looks aweseome.

05-13-2007, 12:23 PM
why thank you. it didnt take much more than a basic knowledge of physics and animation.

05-13-2007, 12:33 PM
this will help me alot

part two of the smoke/bomb tutorial:

next up is flames:

this image has a good example of the smoke whisp and next up, the flames.

flames dont come out of nowhere! they have to build up. so in this it shows how they start. and end for that matter.
we'll start with the building up:

if you watch a real fire, ull see that flames wont just come, unless there is an accelerant. so this shows it with some accelerant. now begin with just a few flames, small at first but they will build up. it is important to have a starting point, for this its the top. the flames have a cycle.

1, they get big
2, they have little sparks
3, the sparks dissintegrate, and the flames get small again

you may want to add some spitting sparks to spread the fire.

now the end:
the flames wont burn unless there is fuel so in my animation, when the fuel has been used, it goes out. my flames just shrink, but for extra effect, you can make the flames turn into sparks and then dissapate.

add some smoke afterwards. your probably going to kill me for contradicting myself but in the last part i said that smoke is heavier, this smoke isnt. the smoke form bombs are more effective when they are densser(so it will stay longer in battle situations) but this smoke will typically rise and dissipate like cigarette smoke.

thanks for reading. please post any comments or problems and ill see if i can explain. plus if you want any other tutorials, post........

Why donts you put part one and part two togetherz? Anyways it a good tut. I'd use it.

05-13-2007, 02:34 PM
well idk, thanx any way

05-24-2007, 10:56 AM
pretty cool smoke on the first one

05-24-2007, 11:06 AM
Nice smoke, but the ball bouncing sucked. It looked like it was going up and got slammed down by some invisible force.

05-24-2007, 01:17 PM
thanks, but thats why i decided to post a tutorial in the first place....>.>

05-29-2007, 11:34 AM
Nice overall tutorial. Keep up the good work.

05-29-2007, 11:48 AM
tell 2d that........ ^.^

06-02-2007, 09:12 PM

06-09-2007, 01:42 PM
Cool, i am going to try this out.

06-11-2007, 09:48 PM

Nice tut! Helped me loads, nice ani too btw, Niceley explained

06-12-2007, 08:43 PM
Oh wow, Very nice tut! good job!

07-28-2007, 01:12 AM
Well, I like using pictures because it's easier but this tut really was helpful.

Also how do you make the smoke? because my hand really trmebles when I use the pen so it always comes out wrong. Can you suggest a way to make smokes from an explosion? Show pictures because I'm very new

great tutorial man. it helped me more with flames...but i didn't know much about smoke either so that really helped. thanks

01-06-2008, 01:36 AM
Thnx alot! i just strted using eztoon and well my anims looked kinda bland without the smoke and fire so this stuff really helped.

03-09-2008, 03:23 AM
wow really helped me

03-15-2008, 11:02 AM
This was...well...decent! Good job. It dissipated a little fast, though.

These examples are really helpful. Next time when I make an animation of 2 ninjas fighting, one is going to throw a smoke bomb and beat the crap out of the other from the inside

I just wanted to bump this because it is an amazing tutorial that a lot of users are overlooking since it is on the second page. Follow his advice, study his smoke animations! Also, try saving the image to your desktop and importing it into flash to have a closer look at the animation.

01-17-2009, 11:59 AM
this is kind of funny, considering i havn't posted here in over a year (yeah...i know) and reading compliments i havn't seen before. i figured i may as well bumb it and see what the new gen of n00bs think...
ps. i think i'll go through the original and spell check a few things.

06-16-2009, 05:34 PM
Sorry to say this but urs sucks too. just like everyone elses. I hate begginers posting tutorials its so retarded

07-26-2009, 05:51 PM
Cool i will try it

10-10-2009, 07:05 PM
yeeeeeah nice tut. it didn't help me but it seems to be helping loads of people

11-28-2009, 08:28 PM
Lol nice tut, first one helped me make my avi

11-29-2009, 10:37 PM
....to all the wannabe snipers!....sniping is not as easy as it looks... there's more to it than just aim and shoot......for all those interested in learning contact me........

12-04-2009, 12:04 PM
The explosion should have been faster, and the dissipation, slower, good job tho, may help lots beginners!

12-29-2009, 06:39 AM
sorry to disturb but im afraid i dont see any of the settings pictures you posted, were they removed??

12-29-2009, 06:43 AM
he didn't post any setting pictures.
