You may have noticed the little game in my sig. I just made it for fun, it took about 2 and a half hours. I wanted to attempt an actionscript clone of one of my favorite little internet games, the famous SFCave (http://www.liquidcode.org/worm.html), better known as "The Worm Game". Why Z-Worm, instead of perhaps F-Worm? Simple, "Z" is by far the coolest sounding letter, especially when said like "zed" the Canadian way.

Self explanitory, click to move, and avoid stuff. The game gets harder as you go along, with the difficulty peaking once you reach about 1400 points. It's almost impossible at that point anyway, so good luck trying to get a high score.

I know the worm segments don't quite line up when you move down quickly, there was nothing I could do about this, save for making the worm fatter, but that made obstacles too hard to dodge.

Don't tell me to add stuff because this is an entirely finished product. Except of course if glitches come up that need fixing.

wow thats prettd good like the name too. you should get a server to hold all the hi scores, thenm there would be a goal for them. makes games like these all that more fun. i dunno what sites hold hiscores though.

Sadly, I know nothing about making working high score tables. If someone can explain it to me in a way that makes sense, unlike most of the tutorials I've found on the subject so far, that would be great. Like, orgasmically great.

I think I had a downloaded .fla (and .php and so on) template from some website, which I tried to make sense of and put into action.

Needless to say, I failed miserably, but if I can dig it up I'll post it, you might have better luck.

I got to 557, at which point I tried to eat some spaghetti and over-pressed the mouse, resulting in my doom.

Brushed pixels?

I am not sure what you're talking about. If you're wondering how I got around Flash's anti-alias, it's actually quite simple. Make sure all your graphics have even pixel dimensions (like, no decimals), and add this actionscript to them:


_y = Math.round(_y)
_x = Math.round(_x)

It rounds off the X and Y coordinates so the object always snaps to pixels. I use pixel graphics a lot for a cleaner look in my games. The font I used is called "BitBold", I forget what site I got it from. The little drop shadows and stuff were an added touch.

maybe a lazer to shoot out the lil walls
or add mini monsters that move up and down that shoot at you

and get a lil wing man, to shoot at stuff

What, nobody got over 1000 yet?

Maybe it's easier for me since I programmed it. After ages (minutes) spent tweaking the physics to play just right I suppose I developed a "feel" for the game.

Its a really good job coding wise, but it isn't that orginal of an idea (although that was kind of the point I see). My only suggestion is that you make it go a little faster or have settings where you could chose how fast the screen moves.

Yeah, originality wasn't even a concern here.

My aim was simply to create a decent Flash clone of the ever popular game, not to add anything new to it. I figured trying to improve on an already perfect formula would ruin the game and take away from the simple addictiveness.

I actually did increase the speed a lot. If you play the original SFcave you'll notice the speed difference between it and my version. I think the only real way to increase the speed more would be to up the frame rate.

If you would care for an explanation as to why, read on:

The little engine I coded that generates the moving terrain works by spitting out segments of terrain each frame. One segment for the bottom, and one for the top. The terrain moves at a rate of 4 pixels per frame, so of course, each segment is 4 pixels wide. If for example I wanted to make the terrain move at 7 pixels per frame instead, I could do it easily, by adjusting the speed, and then making each segment 7 pixels wide.

BUT, there is a tradeoff. Since the tunnel is now composed of 7 pixel sections, it can no longer make as steep of a climb. If the tunnel took a rapid turn upwards, the segments would be very noticeable. It would look like a set of stairs or something, instead of a smooth incline.

I found 4 pixels was the perfect amount, it made the tunnel move fast, while still appearing smooth. In fact, I bet before reading this, a lot of you never noticed any "segments", because it created a decent illusion of a smooth tunnel. Well, as smooth as possible, considering it's not anti-aliased.

Really good game but it's just too easy you should make it so the farther you go the faster your worm moves and more obstacles I got to 813 then i looked away at the TV and crashed.

Hey, I think you've used the "SWF" Tags incorrectly. Try this:

height=100 width=400

This definitely makes the game easier to play. So does going right to the link, which makes it fullscreen.

erm, the idea isn't to click as fast as possible, you only click when you want to move upwards.

I've made a box game, where you are a box with rocket engines and fly around. You land somewhere to refuel. If you run out of fuel and fall (or if you fall for any reason) you respawn at the last place you touched the ground.

It's an awesome game, however when adjusting the physics I ****ed up the code, and since I saved too early, the game has been lost forever.

A slightly less awesome game I made more recently in school is an iceskating game where you run away from this guy called BOB who chases you. He gets faster and faster. You ALWAYS get the countdown to something like 1 or 2 seconds, then lose, and very rarely do you win.

That's what makes it so addicting...

Hmm. I've had another idea for a game. If anyone knows the game "Gravity Atom" where you click to place an atom amongst others, and then it goes towards them and if you put it in the right place, it orbits around them and only hits them AFTER the time runs out?

Oh, man, I'm just loving this. I loved the classic, but I like this version more.

Make it go faster, and make the worm fall faster, it will feel better.

Too bad you couldn't add the original explosion effect.

umm just guessing i think he made-
the tip its own little MC, and it spawned other links on it y cordination
and made there x cord go at same speed as backround,
