View Full Version : Video Game Parody [ENDED] - Summer Competition 2016

Jeff

Details

It's time to bust out your comedy chops and take video games to task with the Video Game Parody competition! We want you to animate a parody of any game you desire; you can poke fun at your favorite game, or satirize one you hate. You don't even have to stick to one game! There are no limitations as to what you can pick this time around, so don't worry about covering the same game as someone else. Just focus on finding the humor in your choice. Keep in mind that you don't need to limit yourself to simple comedy for this competition! If you're more interested in action sequences, why not give action/comedy a shot? Comedy is the primary focus for this competition, but you can include any other elements you want! Think you have what it takes to bring the laughter?

For this competition we would like all entrants to make a thread in the Works In Progress (http://forums.stickpage.com/forumdisplay.php?30-Works-In-Progress) forum and keep it updated with your progress as you animate your submission. Doing this is not a requirement but we will be granting bonus points to those that keep their thread up to date, so make sure you make your thread to collect those points! Here are some past examples of the kind of thread we want you to make:

Evangelion - 1st Place (Pro) Film Tribute Competition (http://forums.stickpage.com/showthread.php?90424-FTC-EVANGELION-1-02-You-are-(not)-done-(-%26%23865%3B%B0-%26%23860%3B%26%23662%3B-%26%23865%3B%B0)) - exceld
Gurren-Lagann - 3rd Place (Pro) Film Tribute Competition (http://forums.stickpage.com/showthread.php?90466-Gurren-Hen-FTC) - Irian
The Hobbit 3 - 1st Place (Intermediate) Film Tribute Competition (http://forums.stickpage.com/showthread.php?90558-FTC-The-Hobbit-3) - Barthimo1
Super Mario - 2nd Place (Pro) Game Tribute Legion 2 (http://forums.stickpage.com/showthread.php?83708-Gtl-Super-mario-bros-trib) - Syrius
Metal Stick Rising - 3rd Place (Pro) Game Tribute Legion 2 (http://forums.stickpage.com/showthread.php?84394-Metal-Gear-Rising-Revengeance-GTL) - Xrebellion

Entry Scoring

Submissions will be scored on the following criteria:

Submission

Humor - Humor is subjective. Instead of judging based on whether or not something made us laugh, we will instead look at the effort put in to making something funny regardless of sense of humor.
Animation - Demonstration of technical animation skill. Things such as timing, rhythm, arcs, squash, stretch, etc. will all be taken into account.
Art - Artistic ability. Includes aspects such as scene composition, use of color, perspective, lighting, attention to detail, etc.
Direction - Your ability to direct an animation, taking in to account things like intent, story telling, emotion, use of music, use of sound effects, etc.
Length - We require a minimum of 90 seconds, but it doesn't have to be exactly 90 seconds. A longer animation is better as long as the quality doesn't suffer because of it.
Originality - We're looking for entrants to try new things! The more you set yourself apart the better.
Extra
Posted Game(s) They Are Parodying in Competition Thread
Created WIP Thread
Kept WIP Thread Updated
The animation itself accounts for the majority of total possible points, but final ranking is not determined solely by how good your animation is.

Winners Announcement
Judges will spend the week reviewing and scoring entries. The final results will be posted this day.

How To Enter

To enter the competition all you need to do is reply to this thread with the game (or games) you want to parody. Every few days we will collect the names of people who've posted and add it to a list of participants which everyone will use to keep track of who's entered and their progress. You may still submit an entry even if you don't make a WIP thread or announce your game here, but you will be at an automatic disadvantage to those who do! When you have finished your entry, ensure you've met all the requirements listed below and send me a private message with your PayPal email address and a link to both the SWF and the FLA of your entry. We will collect submissions and announce the winners according to the timeline above. We will be releasing the submitted animations on a weekly schedule after the competitions ends, so remember not to leak your entry anywhere until two days after it goes up on official StickPage channels! If you do not supply a PayPal email address you will not be able to receive your prize if you win.

Requirements

These must be followed in order for your submission to qualify. Failure to meet these requirements will automatically disqualify your entry.

Must involve stick figures in some way
Must be a complete finished animation, cannot be split into multiple parts
Must have sound effects & music
Must contain a minimum of 90 seconds of animation excluding any introductions or credits
Must have a 16:9 aspect ratio with no letterbox
Must contain official StickPage branding (download Flash package here (http://forums.stickpage.com/StickPage-Branding-Package.zip) or MP4 video package here (http://forums.stickpage.com/StickPage-Branding-Package-Video.zip)), applied in the following ways:
Introduction - A brief animated introduction to be placed at the very beginning of your animation, after any preloaders and before any other introductions
Main Menu Link - If your animation is a SWF and has a menu, a link to StickPage must be present somewhere in it
Watermark - A StickPage watermark must be present in the lower left-hand corner of the animation throughout playback, must be a link to StickPage if it's a SWF
Credits - StickPage must also appear during the credits, must be a link if it's a SWF
All released versions of the animation must contain the StickPage branding described above
Must not be released until a two days after it goes up on official StickPage channels
Must have a PayPal account to receive prize

Cursing - StickPage is frequented by a diverse range of people of various ages and cultures, and as such we tend to air on the side of caution when it comes to a controversial subject like whether or not swear words are appropriate. We would rather you avoid swearing completely within an animation, but censoring any swear words will also work.
Extreme Gore - In the past some talented animators have gone a little overboard with their graphic depiction of violence and gore in their animation, and it left some viewers feeling uncomfortable. To avoid upsetting our viewers we may ask you to tone down some gore if it's too much. This is only in very specific circumstances where the depiction is realistic enough to affect viewers. Your average stick figure cartoon violence is still perfectly fine!

FAQ & Help

Not sure on something? Feel free to post questions in this thread! Common answers or good questions will be added below.

What is aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the ratio between your video's width and height. Usually represented as X:Y, where X relates to the width and Y relates to the height. For this competition we are requiring a 16:9 aspect ratio, which means no matter how large your video resolution is, for every 16 units of your with you need 9 units in height. If you are not sure your animation is the correct aspect ratio, you can quickly use an aspect ratio calculator at this link (http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/aspect_ratio/) by putting in your own animations width and height. 16:9 is a common aspect ratio for video and displays. Standard resolutions for the 16:9 aspect ratio include 640x360, 960x540, 1280x720, & 1920x1080. Typically if you are making an animation it is recommended you animate at either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 if you can for the highest fidelity results, but that is not a requirement. With vector animation software such as Flash you can animate at a lower resolution and scale up with virtually no quality loss, but lines will look thicker and imperfections in detail become more noticeable.

What is letterbox?

In video, a letterbox refers to the matte (black bars) that surround footage that was shot in an aspect ratio different from the video's. The black bars fill in the space from the edge of the video container to the edge where the footage begins. You will most likely recognize this as the black bars you see on the top and bottom of some movies. This happens because some movies are filmed with a 16:10 aspect ratio while most standard widescreen televisions have a 16:9 aspect ratio, so to fit the film in the television the letterbox needs to be added digitally. For this competition we do not want any letterbox, your animation should take up the entire width & height of the canvas.

It's not a series like the old competitions were, so I didn't label it with a catchy acronym in mind. This might be the only time we do video game parody as a theme. If anything it should be like SPC or SPAC for StickPage Animation Competition, since there's going to be a different theme every time.

I'll be honest. I only joined because I saw that you and Arch did, and I heard Smile contemplating it. This is what I wanted from The Nish Stickpage Project years earlier, all us oldfags actually animating some project or competition together. If this ends up fun, I might just turn out to be a regular.

Jeff, quick question. One of the judging criteria's is length, correct? Is there an ideal length? Or are you saying the longer the better? Sorry if this has come up in previous tournaments and is a redundant question. I have a feeling I might ask several before the competition is over, so I will apologize in advance to everyone lol.

Jeff
07-05-2016, 02:19 PM
I have added a branding package containing MP4 versions of the 3 different intros, as well as a transparent PNG image of our logo for watermarking purposes. This is intended for those of you working with video as opposed to Flash.

Feel free to ask anything, this is my first shot at running one of these things so I'm happy to answer questions. The minimum required length is 90 seconds, down from the 120 we used to have in previous competitions. I chose that length because I think that would be ideal for both participants and viewers. I would say the longer the animation is the better - but within reason. It's not as important as some of the other aspects, and could actually work against you if for instance your animation is so long that it becomes boring. Length doesn't directly equal points, but a longer animation would beat out a shorter one if they were two otherwise equal submissions.

I have questions about quality, judging system and judges.
About quality, which exactly are the topics that will be evaluated? mastery of animation principles, visual storytelling, color appliance, humor deliverance, photography direction?
Will the judges evaluate the entries individually or as a group? Will they assign a number of points to the entries given their criteria? How is each category weighted, is there a percentage of the final score each has? How influential are the "extra" categories, how do they fit in the judging process (10/10 for this animation. 8/10 for this one plus 5 extra points for WIP thread)?.
Who are the judges, or is it a single person?
Not trying to be pesky, this info might be useful for entrants, also just curious.

About quality, which exactly are the topics that will be evaluated?

These could definitely be clarified based on the feedback I'm getting, and I will do just that. I know generalized words aren't exactly the best indicator for what we're looking for, so I rewrote the section to be more clear:

Quality - This term is general and touches on a lot of aspects, as an animation's quality is not solely determined by the technical animation skills of the animator. Creating a good animated film involves a lot more than just technical animation skill, you also need to think about things like direction, cinematography, and writing. That is why I've decided to split Quality into a few more explicit terms:

Animation - Demonstration of technical animation skill. Things such as timing, rhythm, arcs, squash, stretch, etc. will all be taken into account.
Art - Artistic ability. Includes aspects such as scene composition, use of color, perspective, lighting, attention to detail, etc.
Direction - Your ability to direct an animation, taking in to account things like intent, story telling, emotion, use of music, use of sound effects, etc.
Humor - Humor is subjective. Instead of judging based on whether or not something made us laugh, we will instead look at the effort put in to making something funny regardless of sense of humor.
Length - We require a minimum of 90 seconds, but it doesn't have to be exactly 90 seconds. A longer animation is better as long as the quality doesn't suffer because of it.
Originality - We're looking for entrants to try new things! The more you set yourself apart the better.

Hopefully this is a little more clear.

Will the judges evaluate the entries individually or as a group?

Individually, so that no one person can influence a group decision. Judge evaluations will be combined in the end to get the final score.

Will they assign a number of points to the entries given their criteria?

Yes. The criteria themselves have points which are added up. This may change in future competitions.

How is each category weighted, is there a percentage of the final score each has?

I don't think I should be divulging this information. Not that I don't want to, but I am unsure if I should as this might cause problems like people to attempt to game the system, skewing it unfairly for those that would rather "meta game". I will say we have attempted to divide the weighting up in such a way that no one category will guarantee a placement, so if you're not a comedic person but a good animator/director, as long as you still make the attempt you have a chance. I will have to get back to you on this when I know how specific I can be.

How influential are the "extra" categories, how do they fit in the judging process (10/10 for this animation. 8/10 for this one plus 5 extra points for WIP thread)?.

Keeping in mind what I said above, the extra criteria are not as influential as the primary criteria, but they are influential enough that someone who doesn't do them might actually lose out to someone who's submission is slightly worse according to the primary criteria. I am well aware of the opinions that some of the people who are entering have, so despite being fairly simple to do, I don't really care if anyone does or doesn't do them. That's why it's not a requirement, but a risk you can take if you're opposed to it for whatever reason.

Who are the judges, or is it a single person?

Are the judges any users on here because I don't think alot of people like me.

For sure myself and CJ will be judging, for obvious reasons. I am also trying to arrange for an additional 2 or 3 judges that are knowledgeable in the subjects above and can give a completely unbiased opinion in order to balance out the roster. I have reached out to a few friends that work in the animation industry that have expressed interest in helping, but it's hard to tell for sure since judging happens in September and they might not be free then. When we get closer to that day I will make sure to announce for sure who is judging.

Not trying to be pesky, this info might be useful for entrants, also just curious.

Not at all, feel free to ask away!

Does the entries have to be in 2D Flash animation? Is 3D acceptable?

3D is perfectly acceptable. The format does not have to be Flash.

So, let's say I filter-rape my entry to make it look really good. Like, Resh level filter rape. Not sure if I'll do this, but asking out of curiosity. Would it be alright to export as an MP4 instead of SWF so there wouldn't be any lag? And what's the maximum allowed resolution if I do? 720p? 1080p? 4K?

1080p is recommended currently. 4K isn't widespread enough yet, but if for some reason you want to target that resolution it's fine. I have video editing tools so I can just shrink down the size as needed.

Hey Jeff, just wondering what the rules regarding having profanity in the animation is. Am I allowed to throw in a few fucks here and there or should I play it safe?

The competition should follow our sponsorship guidelines for swearing and gore. I realize that I didn't put them up in this thread, and I really should. That's my mistake, sorry if this is an inconvenience to anyone but it's necessary for us. You can have 'em in as part of dialogue we'd just prefer if they were censored. For reference here's what our sponsorship guidelines say:

Cursing - StickPage is frequented by a diverse range of people of various ages and cultures, and as such we tend to air on the side of caution when it comes to a controversial subject like whether or not swear words are appropriate. We would rather you avoid swearing completely within an animation, but censoring any swear words will also work.

I will update the main post with these to be clear to everyone. Thanks for bringing this up!

Yeah if it's appropriate for a scene you can adjust the aspect ratio by adding the letterboxing, just don't let it be for the whole animation.

About the no two-partners, it only applies to animation right? I can have as many voice actors as I want right? (Just my friends and family)

You do not need to include a menu at all, even if it's a SWF. The branding guideline is just there in the event that your animation has a menu, but it is not a requirement. I would rather not force an artist to include something pointless just to check a box, so a lot of these can be discussed if they don't work with your vision. For instance if the placement of a StickPage logo in the lower left doesn't work, you can put it in another corner.

About the no two-partners, it only applies to animation right? I can have as many voice actors as I want right? (Just my friends and family)

Sorry, the wording is no two-parters, not partners. You can work with whoever else you want on these but the person that submits the final animation will receive any prize money and they will have to divide it themselves. You can also have any voice actors you want. The rule is meant to make sure people aren't quitting half way through, putting "to be continued" on their animation and submitting it as a finished work. You're not the first person to misread it, so I've re-worded it to clarify.

The winners will be announced on the 24th. That can be pushed back a few days at most, so if you're struggling for time you can have up until the 24th to submit and we'll do the judging during the following week. Other than that I will not be extending the deadline. In the past the generous deadline extensions created a lot of organisational problems and wasn't fair for those that finished on time who had to wait to find out the results. We're following a hard schedule on these competitions, so if you can't finish this time but would still like a shot, you'll have to wait until the next one starts in October.

Yep! I'll try to be more concise in the future. The absolute last day we will accept entries is the 23rd. I have the week in there so the judges have time to go through every entry, so the announcement day will be some time the following week, once the judges have the final results in.

Comprehending your statement, it means that the DEADLIEST DEADLINE would be on September 23, the day before the announcement of winners?

Yep! I'll try to be more concise in the future. The absolute last day we will accept entries is the 23rd. I have the week in there so the judges have time to go through every entry, so the announcement day will be some time the following week, once the judges have the final results in.

so.. is it confirmed that the deadline is extended to September 23rd ?

The time left for this, and the beginner's competition is shown 24/7, up there, at the very top. Why don't you scroll up already. LOL

Nah man, you've got 8 days lol.

I'm confused now. Is the deadline extended or not? The absolute last day is 23, isn't that the new deadline?

Orrrr you mean that this extension is not considered as a deadline but more of a post-deadline extension that might or might not extend until the 23rd? (Note that I stated "might not" since I'm considering the possibility of the judging phase being done early and hence, the announcement is made before the 23rd [PLEASE NO ;.;])

Orr, you're just being sarcastic.

Jeff

You have until the 23rd to submit. This is the official statement. Judging will happen as entries are submitted. The results will not be announced until every submission submitted before the 23rd has been reviewed.

Quick question, are "crap" and "lameass" bad words? I think they're pretty much okay so I used them.

So I haven't checked this thread in a while, I was under the impression we had to get this done by the 17th. Can I submit it "early" or would you rather get all submissions at the same time to organize everything?

Jeff
09-17-2016, 03:56 PM
You may submit it whenever you'd like. We extended the deadline by one week for some people that asked for more time, so if you needed to make any final touches you can hold on a few more days until you're satisfied.

I've been fighting with myself over this for the past few days and I think I've finally come to the conclusion that I won't be finishing it. Shit hit the fan way too quickly in my life and honestly I could probably finish it and place, but there's already quite a bit I wish I had done differently and overall wouldn't be satisfied with the end result. I should be down range by the time the next one kicks off and I'll have plenty of time to devote to the next season. I think this one served me extremely well as a way to get back into animating and it had me trying a whole lot of different things that I'm honestly pretty happy about. Having not animated anything serious in years, this proved a lot more challenging than I anticipated, which was honestly a good thing. I feel I challenged myself quite a bit with the topic, but unfortunately with the time constraint and life working against me I won't be able to properly portray my vision. Again, thanks for the opportunity, Jeff, and I look forward to the next season.

Jeff!
Is that timer set to your timezone or is it programmed to watch over our current computer time? Just asking.
I know there are some codes to HTML that allow the webpage to track the current system time sooo yeah, there might be a conflict with timezones because I'm submitting my anim realllllyyy near the end of the deadline like 11PM of 24 lol

Jeff
09-21-2016, 12:14 PM
It's actually set to use your computer's clock. I am in Mountain Time (GMT - 7) so as long as you submit before the 25th in my timezone it should be fine. Might give you a bit longer. I believe in you!

It's actually already an hour past the due date in my country lol. I guess your timezone is GMT + 7?
And your country is somewhere west of Philippines?

Jeff's timezone is GMT - 7 and belongs approximately near or at the Canadian and US territories.

Irian, those with GMT negatives (-) are west of the prime meridian which is in Greenwich, England (amI right? This is only based on my stock knowledge). Whereas those with positive (+) are in the east. We eastern people are a day ahead of western people.

Barring any last minute drop offs, I believe the competition is officially closed! I hope this provided a fun challenge for everyone, and if not hopefully you at least learned something new :P

I'm excited about the turnout for our first shot at the new series of competition, I think there must be more than 2 hours worth of animation to review. We will be reviewing all the animations some time this week, with the winners being posted by the 30th. I will also have the final stats posted in the winners thread for the stats nerds out there.

I have sent out confirmation PMs to anyone who submitted on time and will be scored by our judges. If you did not get a PM from me confirming your entry then I did not receive your submission for some reason. If you sent it before the deadline and should be considered, please contact me ASAP so that you will be included in the judging. Otherwise your entry will not be considered.

We have ANOTHER competition starting up October 1st, so if you didn't have time to work on a submission this time around definitely check back here in a week and maybe we can pique your interest again.

ALSO I am all ears for any feedback anyone has about this competition! If you have a suggestion or complaint or snarky quip please lay it on me, otherwise I'm just going to continue assuming we're beautiful and flawless.
