"Knife to a Gun Fight" WINNERS - Summer Beginners Competition 2016

    Winners

Hello StickPage! We've wrapped up the beginners competition a little late, but better late than never! Our judges have scored each submission out of 30, with 3 extra points for following the extra criteria. Unfortunately we did not have many submissions for this first run at it, but the submissions we did get show great promise! We were very impressed by the risks that were taken, every entry focused on something different so each was a joy to watch. There were problems getting the judges together, and due to the limited number of entrants and increasing lateness I made the decision to just use the existing votes to determine the winners. Since we only had 4 submissions this time, everyone has won something!

I'm a little disappointed. Oh no, not in the results. I imagine everyone did their best and congrats to them. I'm disappointed that I ended up being too busy to finish my part. Since there were so few entries, I would've at least gotten fifth place and won a prize. I'll try my best to get my entry done for the current competition, as well as ones in the future that I'll probably sign up for. In the meantime, congrats to all the winners!

    That first place though.

See, this is why we should create a clear division between the "Beginner" category and the "Professional" category. It just demotivates future beginner participants from trying to aim for 1st place when a professional joins a beginners competition. Pretty salty about this. Anyway, good stuff.

It's a tough thing to determine because it's a sliding scale for each individual and we can't possibly see every member's past animations. Jaguilar was asked to join the main competitions already, to which he replied that he hasn't released much and considered himself a beginner. I think it's a fair way to test the waters and step up, as I have said previously that if someone's submission hits that level we would ask them to join the main competition next time. We usually look at how good the animation is compared to the rest of them, and if it's so far beyond the median then we would take it out and maybe offer a separate sponsorship. In both cases the author is asked to join the main competitions. I am not sure what more we could do to define the distinction between beginner and not beginner since it's literally impossible to draw an objective line and everyone has different ideas about where they stand.

As much as I agree with this, in the past with previous competitions, I quite remember the hosts asking the participants recent sample animations to gauge their levels. I mean, yes, it isn't a 100% accurate thing but experienced animators can tell whether someone is a beginner or not. Maybe we could bring that back (albeit more work for the hosts and panelists) but it sure can help out with this current problem. Just a simple proposal.

This is my only feedback for this competition. The rest has been handled quite well so I'd just like to say a job well done Jeff.

That's something I can look at doing again. It is a bit more work on my end unless I can enlist the help of some volunteers, but it would be worth it to make sure the people who need the competition are the ones actually participating. I do appreciate the feedback, it helps form a better system in the long run. I will consider this before the next beginner competition goes up.

I'd happily volunteer for that. Even though I'm not too great myself, I can usually tell pretty easy a beginner from a more experienced animator.
