It's an unused map that's the same size as the in-game map desert. It's not in I assume just because there were already 9 maps on the ladder at the time.
Spoiler for quotes:
I think its more forest size actually, tbh all the maps feel slightly different in size except for icelands and gates, I might try to do an accurate measurement sometime.

I am a rebel. (see what I did there?)
dang, I wish they left it in it looked sick. but it was also Ice World in design but brown
This discussion always came up and always ended up with the same thing being said by someone. "X map feels bigger." They've never offered up any reliable testing that contradicts any of the tests run by jli and others in the past.
Here, this is the documentation of the methods, tests, and data gotten by jli's research. https://pastebin.com/Kc1MMCnR
Scroll down to, or search for, "Map Length." There you will find these "hardcore measurements" taken and confirmed by multiple others on the good wiki and the other clan sites.
For the lazy, here is a cut of the map lengths, using grass hills as the relative measure (meaning grass hills is set as the mark of 100 meters, and all other speeds and lengths are derived from this assumption).
And the lengths of the maps are as follows:
From this we can see, Castle is 40% the size of Grass hills, Halloween and Swamp equal at 47% the length, desert at 54% the length, and finally, Ice, forest, and gates all equal at 68% the length of grass hills.Originally Posted by jli's research
It also goes to show how fucking huge GH was, considering the next closest maps to it were only two-thirds the length of it. Good riddance to it.
