Spoiler for Battles, read before challenging :):Show
For the purposes of battles, the below load-out is Shade's standard load-out for gallivanting around the galaxy causing all kinds of problems and advancing his plans. Because his base load-out is very powerful, and in an effort to create a balanced challenge for other players, the challenger will get to chose which powers Shade will be able to access when they fight. Any powers that the challenger does not wish Shade to have, will either be unavailable due to needing repairs, be a malfunctioning part of his suit due to a random series of unfortunate events, or, in the case of warp sorcery, will be unavailable due to the area being blocked off from the warp temporarily for some reason.
Additionally, if you look at his load-out and say, pffttt he would be no challenge at all, then the challenger can allocate X amount of time for each character to prepare for the battle, at which time I can lay out what Shade can bring to bear with X amount of preparation time. He has access to significantly more equipment than his base load-out, and can work preparation rituals in anticipation for an oncoming battle.
This should allow Shade to scale to almost any character power level, while giving him new challenges to attempt to overcome, by having scenarios where he does not have all his normal powers or equipment.
Spoiler for Disclaimer:Show
So firstly this is my first character on here, and I thought it would be cool to use an old NPC from the 40k game I run over skype with my friends. He has been in our divergent lore universe for 4 to 5 years now, so I will be listing a relatively big background.
Secondly, this is a 40k character, he will be geared to fighting stuff in 40k, so one of his biggest weaknesses will be things from other universes, like force powers from star wars, as he has no real defense for them.
Lastly, everything in the app will be under the assumption that he is not going into an encounter fully prepared to fight whatever he is going to fight. It will be his standard load-out when travelling the galaxy, working as a merc, etc.
Spoiler for 40K references:Show
This is for things I will reference in his power descriptions and background.
The warp(immaterium): The warp is an alternate dimension that is along side the material dimension. It is a plane of pure chaotic psychic energy charged by raw emotion. It is shaped by the emotions of races that have an innate connection with the warp, such races include but are not limited to: Orks, Humans, Eldar(space elves), and shade's race.
Spoiler for The Warp Expanded:Show
The Warp:
The Warp is a psychic dimension parallel to real space. It is known by many names: Warpspace, the Immaterium, the Empyrean, the Ether, the Sea of Souls, and also as the Realm of Chaos.
The above link gives a detailed overview of the warp. It is where psykers(psychics) channel their power from, and where sorcery draws its power. Shade uses sorcery, which mimics psykers, but requires the use of words of power, incantations, and rituals(which can take a very long time). You can speak a word, or sets of words with hand gestures to channel warp energy from the warp to real space to create the desired effects. Every chaos ritual though has a chance to go wrong, when this happens, it can fizzle, or it can backlash, if it backlashes, it causes a variety of unpredictable results that can go so far as to imploding the caster and sending them to the warp to be torn apart by demons eternally.
Souls and the warp: Souls are the currency of the demons, because souls can be used as energy sources. For the purposes of balance and this game, I will be using the full metal alchemist power value for a soul, and 99.9% of that will be wasted, while .1% will be usable when souls are expended on the fly. That makes each soul worth 654 terajoules at 100% efficiency, and with 654 gigajoules per soul that can be used to enhance warp sorcery on the fly. To perform a planet threatening ritual, he would need millions to billions of souls for successful completion, depending on what he is doing. To gain a full 100% efficiency at expending souls, one would need to perform an extensive ritual over the course of weeks.
For a frame of reference: 654 gigajoules=daily consumption of a large town 654 terajoules=10 Hiroshima bombs
Xenos: alien
Digi Weapons: Miniaturized versions of another weapon, they have the same energy output but can be the size of a small gem and almost always have a much reduced range. They have one shot before they have to be recharged.
The Chaos Gods: These are four gods that embody the worst, and most powerful human/xenos emotions in 40k.
Tzeentch: chaos god of magic, lies, trickery, and plans
Nurgle: the great grandfather, chaos god of death, decay, plauge, and pestilence.
Khorne: chaos god of war, blood, battle, and violence of all kinds.
Slaanesh: chaos god of lust, envy, excess, and pleasure in all things.
Enslaver: Enslavers are creatures that live in the warp and target psykers(psychic creatures) as hosts. The mind control the creature from the warp, then possess them, then turn their physical body into a warp gate to bring their enslaver friends to the material world through the warp gate. Doing so destroys the host body. Then the group of enslaves goes about mind controlling everything and repeats the process until all the psykers they can find have been killed, bringing as many of them into the real world as possible so they can feed off the minds of intelligent species. Entire civilizations have been eradicated by these creatures. Upon running out of food they return to the warp.
Space marines: super soldiers with powered armor
Grey Knights: superior space marines
Battle barge/battleship/grand cruiser/cruiser/light cruiser/frigate/escort craft: These are space ship classes in warhammer from largest to smallest with the first two being roughly the same.
Spoiler for The Enigma:Show
Name: Shade
Age: Unkown
Race: Unkown
Gender: Unkown
Height: 2'3" | 6' in power suit
Weight: 25Lbs | 150 Lbs in power suit
Spoiler for Appearance:Show
True Appearance: Shade's true form is a two foot tall insectoid with four legs and six arms. He is very frail and weak, but agile and dexterous. He has four antenna and two bulbous compound eyes on either side of his head, giving him an all around vision when out of his suit. His mouth is round and filled with razor sharp teeth like a lamprey with a long, sharp tongue that can be used as a weapon. His body is covered in a sticky slime which was evolutionarily designed to help avoid damage and escape predators, it now only serves for making it easier to escape bonds for him. He is like most insects and has an exoskeleton, though it is rather thin and weak, though light. His body is a sickly pale green color with brown splotches like sunspots all over it. He can only speak in chitters and clicks while out of his suit as well, though he can still communicate telepathically.
In powered suit: In his body suit(which he only takes off in emergencies where death will result otherwise) he stands at exactly 6 feet tall and weighs exactly 150 pounds. The suit is a dark black color with red highlights and is built very sleek and streamlined out of hyper strong and light materials, a cross between living metal and adamantium. It has a black cloak attached to it that Shade almost always keeps pulled up to hide the advanced technological appearance of his powered suit. His helmet is a clear globe that can be blacked out at will, or turned into a one way mirrored surface. He also almost always wears a hood up over his helmet. He moves in a lithe manner, gracefully sweeping around wherever he goes. He also carries an air of superiority everywhere. Under his cloak he carries various weapons and sidearms, most of which are hidden in compartments in the suit, and every once in a while he carries something large enough that he has to carry it in plain sight.
Spoiler for Personality:Show
Shade is an arrogant and utterly confident creature. He has no fear or respect for anything outside of gods. He sees them as weak and inferior creatures scurrying about their short, pointless, lives. They are the fodder that serve his will and they will be used like resources as he needs them. When he is forced to associate with lesser races, he is usually polite, but always comes off as an arrogant arse. He is however, exceedingly patient. He is an architect of the galaxy, and most of his plans stretch across many millennia. He does see the usefulness in mortal races, but only as subservient property, and he values the strongest mortals, many times employing them and taking very good care of his property. On occasion he mingles with mortals and even works as a mercenary in order to accomplish some goal for a plan ten thousand years in the making, or sometimes just to gather information.
Spoiler for Backstory:Show
Spoiler for Abilities:Show
Natural Abilities: He has no extraordinary natural abilities besides telepathic communication, slime secretion, and hyper intelligence.
Warp Sorcery: warp sorcery is the channeling of psychic energy through rituals and sacrifices to form the psychic energy into the desired form. Shade uses a very raw form of the power, shaping the raw immaterium into weapons to use against enemies when not performing advanced rituals. These powers can be amplified by souls that are sacrificed or the ones he carries with him.
Warp ball: Shade can hurl a ball of pure warp energy at a target, it is a relatively potent attack, being able to melt steel, bone, and flesh alike
Mutation: Shade can cause a spontaneous chaos mutation in a target by forcing warp energy into it's DNA. This can cause the following mutations: chaotic tumor growth, limb deformation, new appendage growth, bone fusing, bone spurs, fusing of internal organs, and new organ growth. Souls can be used to make this change more extreme, or even turn the target into a chaos spawn.
Teleportation: Shade can channel the warp to make safe short distance jumps from one point to another by going through the warp itself. Max distance is 100 miles without being empowered by souls. In emergencies where 100 miles is not enough, he can move without safety precautions for much greater distances with a high risk to himself.
Demon Summoning: Shade can spontaneously summon a demon at random, the demon is not under his control and is generally an emergency use of his power. Using souls will increase the chance that the demon is more powerful. Any Tzeentch demon summoned will immediately attack shade over any other target.
Soul Rend: Shade can attempt to tear the soul out of a creature with a soul, and put it in a prepared soul gem. Weak willed creatures have no chance of resisting, while strong willed beings do. The chance of failure can be reduce with an extended multi day ritual before extraction.
Telekinesis: Shade can use low tier telekinesis by channeling warp energy, his max strength without soul empowerment is 1000 Lbs.
Self Repair: Shade can expend souls to repair his weapons, body suit, or body
Reality Tear: With extreme effort, Shade can open a tear in reality, the size depends on the number of souls spent to enhance it, and requires souls spent to be used. This creates a breach in reality where things from the material realm are sucked into the warp(like a vacuum), and things from the warp can enter the material realm.
Mind Burn: Shade can attempt to burn out the synapses of a base level mortal creature by channeling raw warp energy into their brain, this generally results in death. Expending souls can cause the targets head to explode dramatically. This can be resisted by strong willed individuals, or those with psychic shields.
Warp Shield: This is a constant barrier that Shade casts every time he leaves his domain, it protects from physical harm.
Psychic Shield: This is a constant barrier that Shade casts every time he leaves his domain, it protects him from psychic/warp attacks.
Everything Else: So those are just the tip of the iceberg as to what chaos magic can do, it is very open ended. The base line is, you can do about anything you can imagine if you have enough time and enough souls to power the ritual. Examples of things shade has done with preparation: Destroyed planets, trapped Tzeentch's favored greater demon in a soul gem, imploded a star, created a warp storm, traveled back in time, and cleansed chaos corruption from other beings(causing mutations in the process). Now keep in mind that these are not fast processes, they can take millions of sacrifices sometimes and hundreds of years of planning.
Equipment:
Powered Suit: Shade's powered suit is a combination between adamantium and a self repairing living metal. It has above human strength, agility, and speed. He can bend steel with his hands, deflect bullets(not en masse), and run around 40mph. The suit also has a miniature antimatter reactor to power it, this can be used as a last ditch, suicidal weapon if needed. It also has it's own AI core for counter hacking, and electronic interfacing, it can be manually turned off if compromised.
Suit Abilities: Grav boosters for 0G movement or flight, mag boots, 10 hidden compartments of various sizes, x-ray/heat/sonar vision, neural interface controls, Plasma cutter, 2 warp arm-blades(ignore armor), digi-weapon fingers, active camouflage, a built in force field generator, EMP shielding and a self destruct initiative(if he dies or loses consciousness his suit causes the antimatter reactor to critically fail to ensure his technology is never copied).
Digi-weapon standard load-out: 2 plasma cannon fingers, 2 matter dissembler fingers, 2 vortex(mini black hole to the warp) fingers, 2 Nurgle's Rot(supernatural plague) bile cannon fingers, 1 gravity cannon thumb, and one stasis(5 minutes) cannon thumb.
Demon Rods: Shade carries 5 demon rods containing demons/warp entities he has bound to his will. One herald of each of the gods(superior versions of basic demons), and one contains an enslaver(psyker eating creature). To summon them, he needs only break one of the rods and the demon or enslaver will follow his commands until they, or he dies. He cannot however control any other enslavers that are brought into reality due to the enslaver that he releases.
Sonic Pistols: Shade carries two sonic pistols that can be used to destroy matter through concentrated vibrations. The pistols have a large variety of settings, and most can kill normal humans, with the higher settings making them explode. Most stronger substances have to have the pistols set precisely to be able to damage them though. Using the pistols under water amplifies their strength.
Compact Gauss Rifle: Shade carries a compact, Xenos Gauss Rifle in one of his hidden compartments. The weapon fires a pulse of energy that breaks down the atomic structure of whatever it hits with a random degree of penetration, then sucks the energy back to power Shade's suit via wireless power transfer. This is a slightly modified version of the standard Necron infantry weapon, it is potent and can destroy a tank in a single shot as armor means nothing to its matter disassembling blast.
Portable Stasis trap: A portable trap that contains a being in a time stasis. The trap can run on it's battery for 10 days before it runs out of power. Shade carries 3 on him for potential interesting life forms he might encounter. This functions like a bear trap, it would need to be set, and something would need to step on the activation sensor.
Soul Gem: Shade carries a soul gem in a necklace that holds 10 souls for use empowering his warp magic. It can contain more than this but becomes unstable when it does.
Contingency Spells: Shade also keeps a number of contingency spells up on himself at all times in the event that he should die, or worse yet, be attacked by Tzeentch or his minions.
Soul Transference: Should Shade die, his soul will be transferred rapidly through the warp to one of his many clone bodies hiding on long forgotten planets at the fringes of the Galaxy. His soul is protected from demon interference during this journey.
Mind Trap: if one should break through Shade's psychic shield with a telepathic attack, his mind trap contingency spell will be triggered. It traps any would-be attackers' souls in a prison in the warp. This prison is susceptible to demonic invasion, and if escaped the subjects soul will be returned to his/her body.
Various protections from Tzeentch: All of his other contingency spells are geared towards dealing with direct attacks from Tzeentch or his greater demons or demons of the other chaos gods and wont be relevant in most cases.
Spoiler for Weaknesses:Show
Magic: Shade has no defense for magic not of the warp.
Reliance on technology: Shade cannot survive for extended periods of time outside of his powered suit's life support systems. Potential Exploits: Non psychically teleporting him out of his suit. Overloading his suit's systems with an electrical burst. Machine possessing/controlling powers. Hacking his suit(beating his AI).
Reliance on Warp Magic: Shade uses warp magic for a variety of things, were he in an area without warp magic, he would be at a disadvantage, and if he were in a place of anti-warp, he could permanently die. Exampls: Null rods, Anti psykers(psychics), large scale anti psychic field generators.
Over confidence: Shade does not consider anything below a god as any kind of serious threat, and sees mortals as commodities for him to use as he sees fit. He does not take any kind of mortal threat seriously unless they disrupt his plans, or can manage to harm him in some way.
Genocidal Tendencies: When Shade comes across something that is a threat to him and is not a god, he seeks to eradicate whatever that something may be. He will drop what he is doing and focus all his efforts on removing any non god, serious threats from existence.
Paranoia: Shade is paranoid about potentially losing the power he has gained, and perfectly willing to sacrifice, or destroy his property(living creatures) if he suspects treachery or a plot against him.

Photographic memory: Shade remembers almost everything he sees, due to this his brain storage capacity would have been filled a few million years before. To this effect he stores the vast majority of his memories, every thousand years or so, on Center Station, only keeping his most crucial core memories and currently relevant ones in his mind at any given time. He keeps a larger repository of possibly useful memories in his suit's memory storage(backed up at Center Station).
Spoiler for Assets:Show
List of assets Shade has distributed around the galaxy:
The Center Station: This is a space station that shade has constructed and placed at the center of the galaxy as his primary base of operations and is the size of a large asteroid or very small moon(mass=300km diameter hollowed sphere). The station is located just beyond the event horizon of the super-large black hole in the center of the galaxy, orbiting it and staying just beyond the event horizon at any given time. This functions as a very obvious defensive measure as most ships would be unable to navigate the star clusters to get there, and if they had precision warp drives, if they were not exact, it would be extremely easy to jump into the black hole while attempting to reach his station. Shade avoids this obstacle by only coming and going via teleportation. He has designed a specific ritual along with a ritual room, to teleport himself back to that room from anywhere in the galaxy, the ritual takes a few hours to perform. When leaving, he uses the station's built in teleporter matrix to teleport him to a planet in the galactic core where he has ships stashed. The station itself has various PD emplacements and anti capital weapons, but the most dangerous weapons it has are its gravitation beams and tractor beams. These allow it to have would be attackers dragged into the black hole. In the event of a catastrophic event(such as the station being conquered, or AI corruption), the Center Station is programmed to teleport shade's memory cores to a nearby planet stronghold, close the warding dome around the greater demon stored within, and then turn off gravity repulsors, allowing the station to be sucked into the black hole, destroying it and the demon within.
Living ships: Shade has developed a type of living space ship that he can grow, they are capable of FTL and Warp travel. They have advanced bio weapons based on Tyranid anti capital ship weapons and hundreds are seeded across the galaxy. After growth, they burrow deep into the planet and go dormant in the mantel until Shade calls for one for use.
Ships: Shade has collected a large fleet of ships from throughout time, that he stores in a ship graveyard at the edge of the galactic core. In times of absolute emergency, he can man them with clones or robots to be used as an armada in defense of the galaxy. He keeps all of the ships well maintained with maintenance robots.
Clones: shade has a number of clones hidden across the galaxy and a cloning facility on his space station for making more. There are five clones on each of his living ship in clusters, and hundreds of others strewn about the galaxy in hidden bunkers and ancient ruins. If shade's body dies, his soul is transported to the nearest clone body available.
Suits: Shade has many other suits besides his standard suit, each one specializing in a specific field such as melee combat, ranged combat, work and repair, biological experiments, medical work, etc. When he chooses his suit, the suit AI is loaded into the on board AI core to assist Shade in whatever task he is undertaking.
Other Equipment: Shade is a collector of technology, and has virtually every type of weapon used in the galaxy for the past few million years. Most of these he keeps in a repository pocket in the warp, but the most potentially useful of these weapons are kept in his space station displays for easy access if needed. His own inventions are also kept on his station, though the failed prototypes are all kept in his repository.
Servants: Most of shade's servants are insurgents placed throughout the societies of the galaxy, employed by promises of riches and power(which are mostly delivered). He does have a personal army however that he can call upon if needed, in defense of the galaxy. He has millions upon millions of clone warriors and robots kept in temporal stasis awaiting a dire enough time to be needed. Shade also has his defense and servant robots that serve on his space station. If facing a particular threat that needs to be disposed of, Shade may create a monster or creature specifically to destroy that threat. He creates monsters using demonic infusions, gene splicing, and chaos magic to make an ideal specimen for destroying whatever threat has warranted destruction.
Slaves: Shade has many slaves scattered across the galaxy, but what follows are his two most important groups of slaves;
The Prediction Core: This is a group of 1000 precog. psykers(psychics) that are contained in nutrient tanks and implanted with cybernetic control and interface devices. They form a collective mind, controlled by the center station AI, that is used to look into the future and predict future events. They have a roughly 75% accuracy rate. Shade keeps genetic material from each one so that he can clone them if suitable or more powerful precogs are unavailable in the event of a prediction core member's death.
Tzeentch's chosen: This is the chosen greater demon of Tzeentch. It is a humanoid vulture creature with two necks and heads, two wings, a tail, and a crooked spine, forcing it to walk hunched over all the time. The creature's minds contain all the knowledge of the past, present, and future. If you ask the demon a question, one head will tell you the truth and one head will tell you a lie. Shade uses this demon to help confirm his prediction core's predictions.
AI: Shade has two primary, but linked AI programs. The first is located in the massive supercomputer core of the Center Station, and the second is located in whichever his active suit is(there is a backup of the AI on center station). The super computer manages all of the Center Station's processes, defenses, and robots. It also controls the prediction core and works to weed out false predictions by using past events to try and confirm or deny future predictions from the core, those are then combined with answers from the greater demon to calculate the most accurate future predictions possible over the next hundred years. All of this is recorded in the stations near infinite data cores.
Zoo: Shade enjoys collecting living specimens as well as technology. He sees every unique being as a potential genetic enhancer for his experiments and tries to collect two of each species with useful traits to keep in his various stasis zoos. His most valuable one is on Center Station, while the others are scattered around, but near to, the galactic center.
