Dr. David Roy MacBeth
Stopped aging in his mid/late twenties. Was born in the 1880s, though.
6’4” (About 2 meters)
250 lbs. (I’m feeling lazy. Use Google, ye metric folks :P)
He’s derived from Scottish Highland warrior/noble ancestry. That lays the foundation of a lean-yet-powerful build with long limbs. Add to that his obsessive honing to perfection. His figure is somewhere between masculine model, gymnast, and Greco-Roman athlete.
Tall, lithe nobleman/model meets fierce warrior/athlete. He is rather self-conscious about the image he presents.
for In Depth
His features are unmistakably strong and aquiline, but are more refined and noble than rugged. His eyes are a deep green, his hair a golden auburn. He keeps his hair about shoulder-length, but extremely well styled into a flattering feathered mane. He tends to wear a pair of large emerald pendant earrings…each one six carats of perfection set in gold. They are styled to still seem masculine instead of “pretty boy”…David hates the pretty boy look, and never plays into it, despite his attention to his appearance.
He has pretty much never been seen in something other than his signature suit which is a timeless design of pure white with gold and crimson highlights. The material is certainly expensive, but no matter how much he suffers, immediately afterwards it always looks to be in perfect condition. Strange. He wears white leather dress boots that are soft-soled, much like climbing shoes or moccasins.
Straight. He’s not particularly sexual period, though.
Master Warrior/Doctor, leader of Nehushtan, Bearer of a Mind of Wisdom and a Heart of Love, marksman extraordinaire, genius, etc.
for In Depth
David is a genius blessed with an superb mind and heart. He is a master businessman, and the ultimate of refinement and upper-class excellent, yet not “superior” or “stiff.” His people-skills are flawless. His first combat experience was as a field medic/doctor in WWII, and he has been in every war since. He has also served in more espionage style settings (primarily during the Cold War), taking advantage of his position as a doctor.
He is famous as an unparalleled medical genius, without a single failed case in his entire history. He has travelled around the world numerous times living with/studying indigenous peoples and their traditional biomedical knowledge. He is continually making innovations, and knows all of his procedures and information off the top of his head. His memory would make a computer flinch.
He possesses and uncertain amount of wealth -- some pundits claim that he is secretly the wealthiest man in the world. David himself refuses to comment, but his lifestyle, tastes, and seemingly careless use of money seem to support this.
He actually enjoys combat, and is impossible to intimidate, fluster, distract, etc.
He is obsessed with the idea of perfection. He founded Nehushtan, which was a world-encompassing massive organization and para-religion built around the principle of peace, love, justice, righteousness, and brotherhood. His powers and influence made him exceptionally narcissistic, essentially giving him a Christ-complex.
This has been shattered with the commandeering of Greater Nehushtan by David’s formerly trusted ally, Viktor Gustav. He is now left with only The Coils, as well as a spattering of Serpents with whom he maintained personal influence (well, and his considerable wealth).
In the wake of this, he has come to learn the meaning of humility and love for his fellow man. His former self isn’t entirely abolished, but he is actively working towards that. He is now driven by the desire to make the changes he wants to see in the world personally.
David is a loving, charismatic, and courageous leader. On the flip side, he is also a recovering narcissist (formerly with a Jesus-complex).
for In Depth
David is the kind of guy that everyone notices. Period. The instant he enters a room, it’s all eyes on him -- without him even trying. He is also the kind of guy that most people find themselves drawn to without even knowing why…and some people find themselves hating him, without even knowing why.
David is the very definition of charisma. His genius and wisdom aside, he is extremely well learned and exudes a kind of genteel power. His ancestry have been gentlemen/nobleman for centuries and centuries, and he was raised accordingly. Thus, his charisma is not the artificial kind used in modern circles but rather the masterful type that grew from generations of navigating royal courts and castle halls and diplomatic tables.
David constantly measures what emotions he is feeling, and only shows that which he deems most appropriate or useful for the moment. This is less because he is trying to dupe people and more a matter of long-ingrained etiquette and people-skills.
No matter what, he genuinely has a heart for people, particularly the suffering and downtrodden. Even at his most narcissistic, David was still definably “big-hearted.” Now, though, that he is actively fighting back his narcissism, his true tender-heartedness is beginning to show, not just his flawless bedside manner.
His life and mind are his own, and he is essentially impossible to influence. The fact that he is deeply emotional, however, means that things slowly build with him. It is possible to get him enraged or depressed, for example, just by normal methods. It will be difficult (usually involving someone/something he cares about/loves). He also does not show his deepest emotions like most people -- rather, instead of “boiling over” he goes into what Altaer calls “Silent Death Mode.” Something just snaps. He’s vastly more careless about himself (to the point of complete self-sacrifice), but adrenaline has gone into overdrive. Whether he chooses actual combat or something more subtle and sinister, once he has “lost it” David usually does not regain his composure until he has eliminated whatever drove him into that state of mind -- even if it takes years. He can, however, with concerted effort drag himself back into self-control if he so chooses.
He is a man of deep emotions. He loves extremely deeply, and hates extremely deeply. Double descriptives were used there to emphasize the extremeliness of his emotions. So even though he doesn’t show them as others might, they are most definitely there.
He is a master doctor, an avid student of combat, and obsessed with perfection. Yeah, his body is literally the absolute peak of human ability in all accounts. Senses, strength, speed, agility…and ESPECIALLY endurance. The Energizer Bunny has nothing on this dude.
He is the consummate master of rifles, knives, and surgically-precise melee. He makes full use of his medical supplies as aggressive and/or self-supporting tools. (see Equipment)
--Mind of Wisdom:
for In Depth
--Rifle: David uses his rifle like it is a part of his own body. He can fire/ratchet it one-handed with superb accuracy at close and mid range. At long range, however, he uses both hands, and will use his ladder sights for extreme long rang, often with a prop of some kind. Though he typically sheaths the rifle when getting into melee situations, he is more than willing to use it as a club, and can do so with excellent skill. Overall he integrates it with surprising skill into his melee style, drawing and firing it in a split second before sheathing it again. This is one of his keystone weapons, and he will ensure that he does not lose it under any circumstances.
--Knives: David is comfortable using his knives against much larger, longer, and heavier blades such as swords or spears. He is so used to fighting with them that they seem to just “materialize” in his hands -- one second he is unarmed, the next they are drawn and at the ready. Although he will use slashing motions to intimidate his opponent or when it might be advantageous (such as severing an artery or tendon), he prefers thrusting attacks inspired by the Romans. He can, additionally, throw his knives with hair-splitting accuracy and speed. His knives may also be laced with poisons or chemicals of various sorts.
--Hand to Hand: *First, despite looking refined, David is as brutal as they come when it comes to unarmed combat. He will do whatever is necessary to gain his edge. He will use any and all parts of his body to deal damage as violently as necessary, gouging out eyes or snapping bones or emasculating his enemies…anything.
*Secondly, he makes full use of his medical knowledge to take out nerve ganglions, tendons, blood vessels, bones, joints, etc.
*Thirdly, his remarkable strength and long arms enable him to use a kind of grappling technique where he literally wraps himself bodily around his opponent, preventing them from attacking.
*Fourthly, he is extremely agile (with some gymnastics background) and will regularly do what is entirely unexpected -- rolling and flipping and jumping and swinging off of whatever is at hand to avoid being hit, or to maneuver for his own attacks.
David is capable of unusual mental feats, as well as generating two exact living copies of himself at will (Reflections). It has also rendered him immune to psychological attacks/invasions/powers.
--Heart of Love:
for In Depth
--Reflections: David can generate 1-2 exact duplicates of himself at will within the range of sensory perception. These share his consciousness with him -- in essence, all three “Davids” are just one “David” when it comes to the consciousness side of things. This means that whatever each one senses/experiences is senses/experienced by all of them. Though they appear to be individual beings, because they are all “David” they think and move and communicate in perfect subconscious cooperation, no matter how far apart they are. They will always have a sense of where the other is (not GPS exactness, but more a compass-style sense of direction).
--Wisdom: David is extremely wise. Not just intelligent or smart or learned, but wise. He has a natural insight into events, he cannot be fooled or tricked, he can decipher problems faster than can be explained by mere intelligence, and he can gain new knowledge with a single read or observation. He relies not upon luck, but upon seeming to just “know” the right choice to make. This is not a mystical foreknowledge, however -- just him being really, REALLY wise.
David’s emotional capabilities give him the ability to interact with others at a whole new level. He is, in short, an Empath. He is immune to all kinds of Emotional Powers wielded by others, as a result of this.
for In Depth
David’s Empath powers fall into two categories. All effects/powers are instantaneous unless otherwise specified.
--Passive Empathy: David’s Empath powers are always in force passively-- he has no control over this. They have the effect of both allowing him to “read” people’s emotions and influence their emotions. This occurs within a close proximity to him -- about the space of a small room. Neither of these are detectable -- rather, even the most insightful person will only have a vaguely unsettling and unnerving sense about David. His “reading” is a complete psychoanalysis, so to speak, and misses nothing. His influence is little more than a subtle inclination towards whatever emotions he wishes for them to feel. These are easily resisted/counteracted by the person experiencing it -- because of their subtlety, though, most often the victim will not realize they have changed their emotions until the influence has already been at work for a long time.
--Active Empathy: David can actively give/take emotions and feelings to/from people. This can be either in the positive (taking someone’s sorrow and giving them a euphoric joy) or negative (taking someone’s courage and replacing it with a mind-bending fear). This requires either eye contact or physical contact. It takes only a couple seconds, but is technically limitless in its extent. It works, quite simply, by David taking whatever emotion/feeling the person has onto himself, while simultaneously replacing it with whatever he wants them to have. He will always then experience whatever he is taking from them. Active Empathy cannot be stopped or resisted -- it can be counteracted after he has finished, though.
David’s Winchester One-of-a-thousand Lever Action Repeating Rifle was bought by his father in the 1870s straight from the factory. David has changed it significantly.
for In Depth
Externally, it looks about the same, although heavily worn. The barrel is polished, but the stock has been stained by use to a near black, and is heavily marred, despite being thoroughly polished as well. The grain in the wood is visible, but the wood itself has turned to a consistency that is somewhere between the resilience of wood and the hardness of stone. Its lever can be operated with a mere flick of his fingers, and the barrel has been adjusted to fire .50 cal bullets. He will often load specialty rounds directly into the chamber. It holds 25+1 rounds. It is insanely accurate -- David still uses the original flip-up ladder sight on it. For some reason, the Rifle seems indestructible.
David has a vast assortment of specialty ammo. He standard bullets are just high-velocity bullets.
for Short List
He also has all of the following: High Explosive Armor Piercing (HEAP) rounds, drug-bearing rounds (much like tranquilizer darts, except with greater accuracy and distance), stun rounds (deliver an electrical charge), and Aeropyre rounds ***OOC: Non-battle canon only, unless otherwise agreed***(his take on the missle-bullet concept of the Nazis during WWII. Immensely powerful and effective.)
David carries six custom-designed tactical knives. They possess 5.59 inch blades and non-slip grips. They are balanced for throwing as well, and are lightly serrated. The serrations include tiny capillaries designed to hold any poisons/chemicals he wishes to apply. He typically keeps one knife up each sleeve of his jacket in special pockets, one slid into a pocket on each hip, and one on either side of the inside of his jacket.
David carries a vast assortment of his medical equipment with him -- primarily drugs, syringes, and field dressings.
for In Depth
He will always have more than enough to keep himself going through inhuman amounts of damage/stress, as well as always having a number of different poisons on hand. His favorite is a substance used by the Pygmies of central African jungles. It is derived from a tree bark, and is a syrupy rust colored liquid that they use on their hunting darts. Even the tiniest dose is enough to cause almost immediate cardiac arrest in any being.
David’s stylish signature suit just happens to be one of the keystones of his arsenal, largely because it is what he uses to carry his gear.
for In Depth
David’s suit was originally just a master-work of hidden pockets. After having an encounter with Pure Chaos, however, it seems that his pockets are now a bit more like “pocket dimensions.” They are far from infinite -- rather, each pocket seems to be about the size of a small duffle-bag. The largest benefit he derives, however, is less from their size and more from how they behave. He can always grab whatever it is he wants…so long as he is reaching into the right pocket (these pocket dimensions are NOT connected). Also, no matter what he puts into them, so long as it actually fits the pockets will appear and feel like they are completely empty (meaning they will be externally dimensionless and weightless). The largest benefit of this is for his Rifle -- it entirely disappears in the sheath that is built into his jacket’s back, allowing him to always carry it without encumbrance. The same holds true for his knives and medical gear. Please note, however, that these pockets do have limited size. If something will not fit in them, it will not fit. Period.
David owns the P51-D Mustang he flew in WWII. Just like his treasured rifle, however, it has been…adjusted. (**Non-battle canon only, unless otherwise agreed**)
for In Depth
The P51 Mustang was and still is considered the greatest single-prop war plane ever built. It had an incredible flight ceiling, high speed, extreme agility, immense fire-power, and -- most notoriously -- was practically unstoppable. Mustangs were known to be repeatedly riddled with bullets and yet still continue to fly and fight successfully. The durability of this plane certainly matches that of its tireless and unstoppable pilot.
With that background, however, David has gone to a whole new level. He has kept the original engine, but has upgraded it part-by-part to an ultra-high performance system. The prop looks to be original, but has been retro-fitted to be capable of spinning at turbo-prop speeds. The overall framework has been replaced with newer and better materials, as well as the armor. Inspired by a certain comic-strip pilot popular during war-time, he has added extra bits of ingenuity to the craft as well. The plane is capable of flying into (this requires retracting the props momentarily to execute the dive) and under water (again using the props for propulsion, although they are slightly rotated for this), for example, due to special sealing of the intake and exhaust systems (as well as the cockpit). Accentuating its maneuverability is the addition of grappling hooks with nanotube tethers to allow extreme cornering, in addition to more creative uses.
The Mustang was already capable of carrying missiles or bombs. David, though, has equipped it with a hidden system for carrying and launching three types of missiles (intercept, air-to-air, and air-to-ground/smart-bombs). Due to the weight of carrying all three of these at once, they are by necessity rather small missiles, and he can only carry four of each. This is compensated by the corollary that because they are small, they are also quite fast and agile.
The guns on this Warbird are four .50 cal machine guns equipped to fire anti-aircraft rounds. David has not had much need for adjusting the guns (aside from expanding the magazines), but he does use his own varieties of ammunition. Because he is firing so many rounds so quickly, his preferred ammo are his Light Explosive Armor Piercing (LEAP) rounds. The ones fired by his Mustang are much longer and higher-velocity rounds than the ones used by is .50 cal rifle, obviously.
The last unusual piece of equipment he has is the capability of generating an electro-magnetic field around his plane. It is not particularly strong (at its strongest it will only slightly warp the path of incoming attacks, not block them). The key, however, is that aside from his radio and missile targeting system his Warbird is entirely mechanical and analog. Thus, sacrificing his communications and the ability to select missile targets (he can still launch them, but must do so with manual accuracy if he has any hope of the missile’s own chip locking onto his intended target), he can affect those of more “advanced” craft around him. The full-strength range is limited to 100 yards, but it will continue to have effect for 1000 yards. It is not tied directly to the engine, but rather to a pair of superconductor batteries charged by the engine. This means that the field is impossible to overload -- in fact, electrical/radiation based attacks on the field would actually back-feed the batteries and provide him with more charge.
David is an absolute master pilot. It must be noted here that his sensory/mental acuity (plus his Mind of Wisdom) and endurance greatly accentuate his flying ability, especially in such an agile craft. He is capable of retaining consciousness during maneuvers reaching or exceeding 15 Gs (OOC: this is far above what most humans can withstand. There is one stunt pilot, however, who has been recorded several times performing tricks in excess of 13 Gs with almost no physical/mental effects whatsoever, however, so it is still within the range of human capabilities). He can anticipate and respond to attacks with life-saving speed, and will use the most creative tricks he can create to keep himself and his Warbird alive.
Overall performance: David’s P51-D Mustang can nearly reach the sound barrier (approx. 700 mph) in level flight. To exceed the sound barrier, he has to execute a dive with prop retracted. Once the barrier has been broken, David can then re-deploy his prop and continue to accelerate. Because this is somewhat momentum-reliant, however, he cannot exceed 900 mph, and cannot sustain super-sonic speed for long.
Underwater he cannot exceed 50 knots. To return to the air after having been underwater, he uses a set of tiny flaps build into the surface of the plane to mimic the accelerating ability of penguins. This is one-time use only, however, so there can be no mistakes (otherwise he will have to take off from the surface of the water, which is quite difficult and slow). Using it he can accelerate briefly to over 120 knots. His max cruising altitude is 43,000 feet, and his flight ceiling period is around 60,000 feet (that altitude can only be reached through careful manipulation of his own momentum and lift, and even then can only be held for a matter of couple minutes).
David owns a 1930 Bentley Blue Train (in charcoal grey), a brand new Bentley Flying Spur (in silver), and a brand new Rolls-Royce Wraith Custom (in pearlescent white). The two Bentleys are only customized enough to improve their performance…otherwise there is nothing special about them. His Rolls, however, is heavily altered. It has tons of power for extremely high performance, and enough specialty armor (including the glass) to shame a tank. It can also anchor itself to the ground to prevent theft (obviously this is his vehicle of choice when he knows he’s heading into a major fight).
David is totally and completely reliant upon his insane endurance to fight. You can either push him over the brink (which would be difficult or even impossible), or simply find a way to keep things at your pace (either ending them quickly or keeping yourself from becoming taxed).
for In Depth
His combat style is highly taxing. His Empathy causes high levels of stress and internal damage. He will receive immense stress from any damage received by his Reflections. Everything points back to him being able to keep pushing through via his own durability and the use of his medical supplies. The biggest weakness here is his dependence upon his medical supplies to be able to use his supernatural abilities to any major extent. If somehow deprived of these supplies, the stress from his supernatural abilities would quickly meet or exceed what he can handle on his own.
Despite his alterations and skill with his weapons, David’s weapons of choice are inherently limited.
Medical Gear Limitations:
for In Depth
David’s rifle only hold so many rounds, and takes a long time to reload. He doesn’t have a clip -- he has to manually feed rounds into the long repeating chamber to refill it (or just make do with feeding rounds directly into the firing chamber). He is extremely dexterous with his rifle, but still -- it is a long and heavy weapon, not a pistol.
Knives are knives. He can use them confidently against much larger weapons, but still. They only have 5.5 inch blades. Also, throwing them comes with the logical consequence of having to either go out of his way to get them back, or having to deal without them. He carries six, but in a close battle those six knives can be used quite fast. Additionally, they are made of a normal material (not indestructible like his rifle). They are extremely high quality, and stout by nature, but nevertheless you can still break them, and they only have so much cutting/piercing ability.
His Warbird is highly enhanced and extremely versatile, but a prop-plane is a prop-plane. It also uses a combustion engine. And fuel (he uses a type of fuel engineered off of rocket designs that supplies its own oxygen during the combustion process, but still). These give it obvious dependencies. Blow out its fuel tanks, and he cannot do much. He can only fly so high, only fly so fast, only fly so long. His weaponry might be creative, but it is still constrained by having to consider his overall weight, as well as his desire to make it appear just like it originally did. His EM field is also depended upon a set of superconductor batteries charged by the engine. These recharge so long as the engine is running, but it can only be run in 15 minute bursts, and takes another full 15 minutes to recharge. Running them while the engine is off will drop their run time to only 7 minutes. Again, even right against the plane the field is only strong enough to warp the path of incoming fire, not block it or even fully deflect at direct hit. Glancing blows or attacks that are more apt to be affected by EM fields, however, might be better handled. Also, they don’t operate underwater. If David attempts to run them underwater, he would achieve a single massive EM pulse from a complete instantaneous discharge, and then be left with blown-out batteries that could not be used again until replaced.
There is only so much he can do to get his chemicals into/onto an opponent, or into/onto himself. Stop him from being able to do this, and you will have made him waste valuable resources from his limited stash (well, he can get more if he is near one of his vehicles, but can only carry so much. He sacrifices quantity for variety in what he personally carries).
Mind of Wisdom:
Heart of Love:
for In Depth
David’s Reflections can only be generated within the range of his sensory perception. Seal off all of his senses and put him in a sealed prison cell…you’ve solved that problem. Also, sharing consciousness with them means that all of them suffer the same pains. If you brutally kill one of them, the other two will receive the mental stress that corresponds to that. The stress from this kind of pain-sharing is enough to cause major health problems (particularly with the heart). David can push himself through the torture/death of two Reflections. More than that, however, would require use of his medical equipment to sustain himself.
His wisdom, also, is not to be considered a psychological power. It is merely wisdom in hyper-drive. Thus, while he will tend to anticipate things and make the perfect decisions, this is limited by his focus as well as the laws of time and probability (he cannot see the future, only make a really good educated guess). He learns in a snap, and thus has tons of knowledge about everything. It must be remembered that it is one thing to KNOW…it is another thing to DO. David, for example, knows how to operate a submersible. The chances of him actually sinking it if he tried, however, are probably equal to the chances of him using it successfully.
**Passive: Remember, he can read emotions, not thoughts. Secondly, his influence is weak, and therefore extremely slow to produce any visible effects. **Active: The more intense the emotions/feelings, the greater the stress on his body and mind (even in a positive sense…if he steals someone’s joy, he might receive joy, but it is an extremely unnatural emotion nonetheless, and thus extremely stressful and dangerous). The more times he repeats the action (because it can be counteracted by the victim bringing up their own emotions again, although that is quite difficult), the greater the stress. If he was faced with a source of infinite emotions/feelings, he could steal them all and replace them with the emotion of his choice, but the result would be his instant death.
For a Demo, Please see one of my battles with David listed at the bottom of the char page. (I might write up a special Demo, but for now one of those will have to do).
