*rage snip*

Right now so, I don't even know what to say to this. There's no use in giving me all this extra time if you're just gonna turn on me at the very last second without any second notice. I haven't gotten the slightest sort of message today asking me for my part, or stating that you will claim the forfeit. It's just here, as if you woke up and decided to just do this when you didn't immediately see my part served to you on a golden platter.

And this hurts, Alphaeus, in so many ways. It hurts me that you would give me so much time only to do something so inexplicably basic as this at the very end. I was very grateful to you about all this time you had given to me, truly I was and still am, and that comes with a special sort of high regard, trust and respect that's more than just what you give to some average pleb you barely know. I cared a lot for this battle even though I might not exactly have shown it, I had a lot of trust riding on you and I hated myself for having to disappoint you with the time this shit took over and over again.

I was out today, as I had half expected and why I was hammering on the fact that you'd have it by Monday or Tuesday, I knew I'd be in for a busy weekend of sorts and I knew for a matter of fact that I'd be on short time on Monday. I was working on this, revising, but I saw I needed time till Tuesday and with it comes that awful feeling of having to disappoint one you've already gotten so much from again.

And then all of that is just... undone. All of that respect, all of that beating up oneself, all of that high regard. It stings a lot, it makes me embarrassed, it makes me sad to just have to give up on all that trust and appreciation with something like this. It's the last that even bothers me the most and is what eludes such impulsive reaction from me, because it's a constant battle against becoming cynical for me, and as I was out Monday night I was thinking about the battle and beating myself up to it and I imagined that you'd have pulled a stunt like this while I wasn't around to stop it.

But I just rejected that thought because I thought I was being cynical and I was trusting you. Well shame on me apparently.

I have already contacted you in a more formal manner on Skype than I did via PM (ahem, excuse me for that but I was understandably angry). It's up to you really but don't think I'm just leaving it at this.

I've never understood how people just declare forfeit without asking the other party if they give up or not. I've been in a battle with Waffle for 3+ months now and he's gone way beyond the deadline, but I won't declare forfeit until he says so himself that he can't do it. Love you waffles baby, come back to me.

Declaring forfeit without the consent of the other party, it doesn't matter how long it's been without one or the other talking, is a scumbag move. Ask a mod to delete this and sort your differences through PM or Skype.

Vern himself gave me at least four deadlines, which he then passed.

For canon reasons with my latest battle, this HAS to be posted one way or the other.

Lastly, there ARE deadlines in wRHG for a reason, and the rules clearly place me in the right.

Furthermore, he never had the decency to just flat out be honest with me and tell me that he was postponing this period, but rather led me on over and over that he was getting it done. I do not appreciate having my own patience be abused in this manner. Malacal at least had the honesty to tell me in his battle that he was not going to be able to get his done, and that I could claim forfeit.

Vern, if you had ever just flat out told me what you needed, I would have accommodated you. But instead you repeatedly gave me false hope.

Why did you not just say "Hey, I simply can't get this done by Monday," instead of indicating that you were fine with this?

Had you told me that, I would have waited. Instead, you gave the appearance that you just said "well fuck you Alph, I don't give a shit about the deadline I just Okayed."

I am perfectly willing to reverse this forfeit claim, based upon this explanation. Please, however, considering just being honest about your own feelings on a deadline in the future, so that there are no miscommunications.

Okay, does the win matter to you?

Because clearly, this is about the win. You made a battle thread knowing about this deadline shit regardless of who's right or wrong, you made it a battle you knew you'd win easy if you just posted it right now.

Because. If it's not about the win, then why make a battle thread in the first place. Just don't care that it was a battle and post it as a work you wrote that needed to be posted. AND THEN when Vern finally finishes his thing, just link your thread.

Problem solved, guys. There's no need for this nonsense.

By virtue of this sentence I can only conclude that you are more absorbed with being 'right' and 'winning' than being the bigger man, shaking hands and resolving the situation.

Yes there are deadlines, but I like to think many others consider it a suggestion than something to closely follow. No one wants to just submit their work and win, they want to be able to compete with their opponent, to know that their efforts were matched and to win by merit. Forfeits simply shouldn't happen unless the other writer explicitly states their intention to give up. So i like to think.

I don't have much more, because Hewitt has said it all. Regardless of whether Vern hadn't been forthright about deadlines and his initial, less-than-civil response, you ought to think over about just what your priorities were when you posted this thread.

idk mang, I think that thinking deadlines are guidelines, and not things that must be met or else, is really bad. Both for writing and for life in general. Alphaeus did this thread poorly, but he's not wrong about the fact that missing 4 deadlines is ridiculous. Especially if his part was done before the first one (?)
In the end it's for you two to figure out, but deadlines are deadlines for a reason. Otherwise you might as well not have one at all.

Edit: Wait no. If Alphaeus said that Vern had until Tuesday to finish his part, then he has until Tuesday. He can't claim that he's won sooner than that.

Edit 2: Wait isn't it Tuesday today? Lmao. I don't know what time zones you guys are in but I think it's pretty rude of Vern to extend the deadline 4 times and then get legitimately upset when Alphaeus doesn't want to extend it a 5th time

OMG Alphaeus, you got dunked on almost as hard as me in my first do of Alex! Welcome to the Shit-On Club! Insults are free!

Hmm...Let's look at this:

Devour affirmed my interpretation of Deadlines. I rescended my forfeit claim because Vern finally explained why he could not post, and I do not like to claim forfeits.

You're posting of Alex was (and still is, to a certain extent) vastly different from a simple decision.
