I think this is the overlying theme here. Whether or not you want to add the hype and audience is up to you.

I see, also can we make the players full-body/cartoons while the game itself focuses on stick-figures?
Since the animation would definitely focus on the game then the game should be composed of stick figures.
But the player scenes would be only cutscenes and I can best express the expressiona when it's not stick figure.

Analyzing guramecon and Arch-Angel's statements, they're saying that it doesn't need an audience nor is it necessary to show the players.
Also, it is alright to animate only the game. A multiplayer game.

However, wouldn't it just end up like another game tribute if you don't show the players and the audience?

technically yes, but it depends with the participants whether they choose to be the meta itself or animate within the animation world.
But this theme is focusing the multiplayer competition (eSport), you can say this is Competition Multiplayer Game Tribute Legion lol.

Wait, since this doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be in an official competition setup with all the announcers and audience and prize pools, that means I can animate friends doing a friendly competition in, per say, an internet cafe, right? Still eSports.

That game should be fine! I know we might get a lot of "not an eSport" comments but there isn't really a clear definition yet for what is and isn't an eSport, so generally if it has enough of a competitive following you should be safe!

You can choose as many games as you want if you want to do a mashup. If you want to get more liberal with the game universe feel free to do so, but be warned if you stray too much from the theme your submission might be disqualified.

You can do either of those, maybe I should be more clear in the main post but the animation doesn't need to be about a tournament you can just have it take place in the game
