But politics seems to have devolved into 'how can I get as many voters as possible?' and 'how can I keep people from voting for that other guy' with little thought given to what will happen once they're actually elected.

Politics is just the system that is used to determine who has power in the institution of government. (Two days of american government will make you say crazy things)

Politics itself isn't corrupt, the people involved in politics are corrupt. People in general are corrupt. 9/10 people who get some kind of power that they didn't previously have, they will abuse it in some way. It is just human nature.
