Though out history religion has been used as a tool, for conquest mostly, now for financial security and special exemptions. But do these religions actually represent the beliefs that they are supposedly based in or are they just another attempt at achieving power via the masses?

You could say from the very beginning religion has just been a tool, by Shamans, and then by Priests, and then by king and conquerors. From justifying genocide to just having a cushier life.

It's a sad reality.

The only times that religion actually follows the beliefs are when people base their beliefs directly on the religion. Most modern people's beliefs don't fit any particular religion to the letter.

Just all the holy crusades, suicide bombing in the name of allah, and the mass witch burnings in the name of god.

Yeah, I would say they are around the number 1 killer of all men in modern society in the 1st world.

Me, to me Religion is a law. The Ten Commandments were derived from Hammabusi's code ( Spelling? ), and was more of a civil law in the long run. Which I believe is a good thing, as the bible teaches respect and kindness; just in history people took this too seriously and out of context, and bombings and crusades happened.

I am an atheist however, and I do not believe that any of the religions hold any truth of a higher being like an angel or god; just a pretty fairy-tale.

The religion holds no belief, it is not based on belief.

It is based on trying to have a hope of something bigger out there and civil law enforcement.

re·li·gion Audio Help /rɪˈlɪdʒən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ri-lij-uhn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.

I think religions are used as an easier way to classify people, or put them into a group, or maybe used as a way to unify people. Beliefs themselves can always be different, but the dogma and practice of those beliefs becomes religion.

I guess I can see the practicality of religion, but its power is always abused.
