Its from the same group who made flcl I'm pretty sure. They are known for doing weird stuff that is super amazing. This is a great series, they get really exaggerated with the power attacks, and its funny because they don't take themselves seriously as a mech anime, which is why it works so well. you get attached to the characters, and they die a lot, which kept me watching. Its 24-26 episodes long, and its worth a watch if you can find a good download.

Gainax did alot of things, including Evangelion.

Actually, I don't think they did much, this was the first big project they've worked on since FLCL to my knowledge. They did Eva, then FLCL, then this, with some supporting roles in other projects in between.
