tried that too, but it comes out very weird when you try it with harder things. Also I don't think it really 'vanishes', I think the length is only a bit further.

It depends where the light source is. If it's at floor level then that test is accurate. Normally, however, the shadow would crawl along the floor and then go up the wall.
