I heard about it from my Science teacher but my History teacher played a video about it and when it said 1/3 or whatever the statistic was I looked around the class of 30 people (around I'd say 17 of which of girls) and I laughed to myself thinking "Someones got an STD!" and I wanted to raise my hand so badly and say "So, if this study is true then at least ONE person here has an STD?" And then have the entire class freak out over if it was them or not and they'd go fill up some medical offices getting tested.

It'd be great.

at my school, they tell us why we shouldnt have sex and about having safe sex though they obviously want us to be abstinent. condoms really dont help that much. if they arent just flat out lying to us, the only STD that condoms help prevent is HIV. and condoms can break and shit.

That's really more or less the classic conservative method they're starting to pick up nowadays. Sexual education isn't the only thing schools have used scare tactics in, lately.

I find myself nodding to Pirate's posts, so I'll agree with him. 100% fair education is needed, not just with sex. Think about it with We have a right to know everything, not have some stupid spin on it. Fair Education, then Fair trade :P

Probably abstinence-based education; the slideshow being a scare tactic.

Not only do these classes ignore the fact that there are a bunch of hormone-powered kids watching these videos bent on scaring them into abstinence, but they are poorly taught as well.

if they are stupid enough to be scared into being abstinent instead of easily slipping on a condom, then **** their dumb asses.

You can't teach marriage as a standard of morality in schools. That would be even worse than the current abstinence programs. I mean, I understand why you would like them, since they support your personal beliefs about marriage, but you have to accept that your standards of morality are by no means

Actually several abstinence programs already are teaching just that. Ever heard of Silver Ring Thing? Thats one of the largest and most popular.

What I believe is right isn't a defining standard either, nobody has "perfect" morals because right and wrong are all a matter of personal belief and perception. All I'm saying is that schools need to ditch any implied morality whatsoever and teach kids FACTS, plain facts with no spin on them whatsoever. Same deal goes for, as someone mentioned, the way schools teach about drugs and alcohol. Ditch the preaching about how bad drugs are, even if their reasons for opposing drug use may be valid, and just give kids the plain, no bullshit, factual information.

Agree perfectly. If I see something as "bad", I'm more likely to experiment with it.

I mean, we may never agree regarding our opinions on pre-marital sex, but you can't really believe that kids need to be specifically "taught not to have sex until they are legally married". You act as if kids would be any more likely to be influenced by that suggestion as they are by that of abstinence.

Not predominantly, no. Not 'till marriage. It does need to be suggested though.

I certainly wouldn't want a program that encourages kids to not marry, and encourages pre-marital sex either, so don't act as if I'm being biased as well. Like I said, I think everything taught in school should be bullshit-free factual information, no strings attached.

Yes. Excellent lead-in. I'll get back to that in my post below.

As opposed to attacking what? Why wouldn't it make sense to attack a system of education that clearly isn't working? Where do you figure blame should be placed instead?

Well, first of all, people shouldn't be attacking anything.
There should be no muckraking or mudlsinging because it only clouds the issue.
The programs should be evaluated, and dismissed or continued depending on the evaluation.
Media and angry people only seem to get in the way. Thats the point.

And now for the other topic.
After talking to a bunch of my classmates, asking them what kind of sex-education they had, and wether they enjoyed it or even listened or not, I found out that you are right. Most of the teachers are older women who tend to skew the facts, bore the class, and give the impression that any kind of sex will cause you to burn in hell for eternity.

I think the main problem is right there.
We need teachers who know the facts, tell them without bias, and don't bore the class or give the wrong impression.

And teen girls who get STDs were either raped, or just stupid ****ing sluts that don't have the dude ****ing them with their puss-ey, molding, boil covered dick have them put a ****ing trojan on.

Actually, you couldn't possibly be more wrong.
If you had read the article you would have noticed this:
At least one in four teenage American girls has a sexually transmitted disease,

I seriously doubt 1/4 of our nation has been raped or were "stupid ****ing sluts".

PD classes in NSW Aust. are nothing like that, I mean everyone was give a comdom, taught how to put one on, taught about a shit load of other birth controls. The only thing that was vaguely absentent was when they said that abstinence is the only 100% protection against STD's and the like. But everything is about equal.

A compelling argument.

But, would you mind elaborating on why you believe morality needs to be included? Not trying to be a smartass, but seriously, you dodged around the main point of my entire argument.

Also, it looks to me like you contradicted yourself:

How do you consider suggesting that people wait until marriage is without bias? In my mind, unbiased means straight facts. It means telling kids all the information they need to know, and not even slightly hinting at any sort of morality, or trying to make any suggestion whatsoever about when it's "ok" to have sex.

bias is when preconceived notions color your judgment of a particular issue, so pushing the idea that sex should wait until marriage is definitely biased.

assuming you are informing the class about contraceptives, an approach you appear to be advocating, there's no reason a married couple having safe sex is in any way preferable to an unmarried couple having safe sex. so if you're saying the teacher should be suggesting that kids "wait until marriage," the only reason is a bias toward the institution of marriage...
