Are you downloading Linux versions? and are they for the right distro?

Also, a chat client should come stock on Linux, usually pidgen.

I really doubt you'll need to login as root, seeing you know very little about the OS itself. It'll likely do you more harm than good. I haven't logged in as root and I've used Ubuntu for quite some time now.

If you need higher permission to do a certain action (install, write/access file etc.), just use the sudo (superuser do) command, and insert your own password (the one you log in with). Say you wanted to install Pidgin;

sudo apt-get install pidgin

When it asks

[sudo] password for

Just type in your own password. And you're done. It's elementary.

Other than that, I can't see what's the problem. 2-D linked you to all the stuff you wanted, and they usually have a README or INSTALL file to tell you how to install the stuff.
