I'm working on a survival-horror game. I already have over four pages of ideas in a notebook of what I think would be scary, and I went around asking people today, but I don't think most of the population would be as "strong-minded" as someone who's been on /b/ for more than a few minutes. And if I can scare some retard /b/tard, then I can scare anyone else.
No, pop-out monsters that go boo aren't scary.
Also, don't expect me to make a thread about it for awhile. I'm primarily working on the story/direction/controls/etc right now.
Honestly, I want to try to make a 2-d sidescroller. I know it is improbable that anything like that could have horror in it, but if I actually did it right then it would be highly regarded.
What scares you?

Add subtle picture-in-material effects such as goatse on the wall. People will see it, but they won't. Know what I'm sayin', man?

Anything that makes a loud, unexpected noise and screen flash will cause shitting, if used sparingly.

Aye, I've already gotten that written down a few times. Like I said, I've been thinking about ways to scare people for awhile now, I'm just posting this so I don't miss some really good stuff. I'm thinking of it from a gameplay point to, no SURPRISE LOL UR DED NOW GO BACK 10 MINUTES shit. Also, I'm using specific save points, it's great for building anxiety as long as I don't go to far.

Are you going to have things that chase you while you are defenseless so you have to run away? Things, as in faceless people with knives and the like, or is this one of those point-and-click type games where it'd be harder to do?

I really haven't decided yet. I might do a segment in the beginning where you're defenseless just to get the adrenaline running followed by a moment of "GASP, YOU HAVE FOUND THE SECRET UN-SUPERVISED US MARINES ARSENAL SUPPLY!"

I find people screaming and crying in despair from torture pretty spine tingling.

IS THAT BEAST COMING FROM HER VAGINA?
Also, pitch black. The darkness creates a generally scary feel. Things moving fast in the dark, things standing still in the dark. Anything unexpected, and that which is highly expected. If you look down to get something from the cupboard below a window, maybe this is just me, but I expect something to be staring through the window when I look up. That scares the shit out of me, and I always expect it.

Maybe. I think it's like Parasite Eve concept art or some shit.
Also. I agree with the darkness and the mirror idea. Same thing with mirrors. The idea of brushing my teeth, looking up, and seeing some disfigured humanoid behind me in the mirror.
