I walked into the theater last night, wondering how this movie turned out. For people who don't know, this was a remake of the 1951 film. Here's what I have to say...
It started out fast paced and interesting, although it was hard to grasp who was most important in the storyline. As the movie progressed, the special effects wowed me, especially when the spheres landed. Towards the middle, the dialouge became streched out, and I found myself asking what the **** did the kid have to do with the story line. The "process" begun, and they kept trying to get to New York. When they finally get their, I'm going like WTF? Why would you decide to try and blow up a sphere that you already shot at so many times? And further more, why was every place deserted, knowing that all accept one of the spheres had left. So they can't get to the sphere cause they are surrounded by the disintegrating bugs (Bible Reference?) that are cleansing the Earth of the human race so that way it can be used for a peaceful race. Let me just stop here and explain something. The aliens send a scout (Keanu Reeves) to see if the human race treats their planet right. The aliens arn't like blow em up kinda people, they try and preserve life throughout the universe. Helen, the protaganist of sorts, takes him in, hoping to reach some sort of peace with the aliens. The scout is in a human form. The scout meets one of his contacts and the contact reports that the humans are too destructive, violent, planet destorying, ect. Using this, he activiates "the process" that will destroy human life and save all the other life on the planet. When Helen finds this out, she tries to get him to change his mind about the human race. So the messenger, after consulting with Helen's professer, decides to change his mind. So anyways, they go into this tunnel and the scout holds em off and saves the humans.
OVerall, it was a good movie. I found the kids storyline annoying and irrelevant with several plotholes. One, he never said he loved helen, or liked her, being a total bitch to her. His whole character never changed. And in the end, the scout never actually saw the humans "change" which is what the professer had explained to the scout.
The ending was terrible and too much attention was drawn to Jaden Smith.
I give it a..B, B-. I hope they have something totalyy differnt for the ending on DVD.

The strong religious overtones, the bland characterization, the lack of characters who I cared for, the son, who was really just THERE and didn't do much, and the green movement propaganda.

If they took that ****ing kid out of it it would have been great. He was basically the conflict in the movie. If Helen had just been like "SHUT THE **** UP YOU LITTLE PRICK" at the beginning, then he wouldn't have called the army, they wouldn't have tried to kill anyone, Klaatu would have gotten to the sphere with time to spare and basically everything would have worked out. They should have just stuck with the scientists at the beginning (if they were the main characters than the whole thing would have been so much better), who they just dropped after that one scene and you never saw any of them again.

No, the start of the media flood was An inconvenient Truth.
I hope it saves our asses
The green movement is bullshit. Our situation isn't as bad as people like to say, They're just trying to get you to buy their products with "green" in the name.
