If you want to test your virus scanner's functionality, you can make this "Test Virus" and see if your AV responds to it. The "Virus" is just a 68-byte piece of text string that should be copied and saved in a .com file. It does nothing and has been made for testing AV softwares. Most of the virus scanners is programmed to detect this "virus", especially the common and bigger ones.

My AVG scanner recognized this immediately and asked to remove it.

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm (if you want to know more)

How to use:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

1. Open a texteditor (notepad)
2. Copy & paste the code
3. Save as "anything.com"

EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE ONLY!

PS: I heard if you got a real hardcore scanner it could even detect the "virus" code on the webpage and warn you, if you wondering what's going on. ;)

No, I was not surprised. I run a modified version of AVG, which uses both its database and that of Kasperspys and Bitdefender.

I would be surprised if it did not find it immediately. VERY surprised.
