I was reading New Scientist the other day and came across this.

I think we are all agreed that we have two parents, four grandparents, eight grandparents and so on. At 30 generations, you would expect to have over a billion ancestors. Here's the dilemma: if you were to research your family tree back 40 generations (only 1000 years or so) it would total to more people than have ever lived. There's a flaw in the maths somewhere.

The simple answer is that people have children with cousins. And not just cousins, closer. Fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, brothers and sisters. Do I need to get any worse?

If you have shared ancestors going back 40 generations it will not equal to more people than have ever lived, which makes it impossible for any of us to not be a result of some form of very close inbreeding. People criticise inbreeding, but (try to) think about it. If it weren't for inbreeding, you wouldn't be here now. It's a sick thought, but it's true.

The flaw in the original calculation was the assumption that every name in the family tree was unique, e.g if your parents were cousins then you would only have 6 great-grandparents and so on. In fact, in today's world it is legal for cousins to marry, and so the "inbreeding" (if such a strong word could be used) continues.

So, distant cousins of mine, discuss this topic. Are you surprised? Sickened?

It's pure logic, but close relative inbreeding is considered "wrong" not the distant kind.

Better yet, the definition states close relatives. So distant "inbreeding" isn't actual inbreeding.
