I'm sure a few people here use 3DS Max, I'm sort of noob at it still and was wondering if someone could remind me of how to apply different materials to different parts of the same object?

EDIT: Oh and it would also be nice to know how to add a border all around the edge of an object like a box, I've been just selecting polygons on each face of the box and extruding them in. But I'm sure there was a way to select the edges and make a border of some sort out of them.
