WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma is a publicly funded institution which should be open to all ideas and should train students in all disciplines of study and research and to use independent thinking and free inquiry; and
WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma has planned a year-long celebration of the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s theory of evolution, called the “Darwin 2009 Project”, which includes a series of lectures, public speakers, and a course on the history of evolution; and
WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma, as a part of the Darwin 2009 Project, has invited as a public speaker on campus, Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published opinions, as represented in his 2006 book “The God Delusion”, and public statements on the theory of evolution demonstrate an intolerance for cultural diversity and diversity of thinking and are views that are not shared and are not representative of the thinking of a majority of the citizens of Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, the invitation for Richard Dawkins to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma on Friday, March 6, 2009, will only serve to present a biased philosophy on the theory of evolution to the exclusion of all other divergent considerations rather than teaching a scientific concept.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 52ND OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma House of Representative strongly opposes the invitation to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma to Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published statements on the theory of evolution and opinion about those who do not believe in the theory are contrary and offensive to the views and opinions of most citizens of Oklahoma.
THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives encourages the University of Oklahoma to engage in an open, dignified, and fair discussion of the Darwinian theory of evolution and all other scientific theories which is the approach that a public institution should be engaged in and which represents the desire and interest of the citizens of Oklahoma.
THAT a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the University of Oklahoma, the Dean of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Oklahoma, and the Chair of the Department of Zoology at the University of Oklahoma.
GRRRRRR this pisses me off.

View Profile tldr; some place doesn't want Richard Dawkins to speak about evolution because he's offensive?

View Profile ...Richard dawkins is offensive. That's why he is called "Darwin's Rottweiler". He directly attacks every other belief but his own, in a viscous offensive manner. I support Oklahoma universities decision, and I think the way they suggested the celebration go about this is correct.

So does Ash, but he's still allowed there >_>.

View Profile This isn't a public gathering, where the city/university needs to protect people from all religions from offense.

He may be aggressive, but this thing isn't mandatory. Most contact these people would of had with this thing is maybe seeing a flyer or advertisement.
What happens when they read the word EVOLUTION or DARWIN or DAWKINS? They go into some kind of bible shock and seize up and die?

View Profile Well that's pretty lame, but then again they don't even have to have him speaking there in the first place. You can't blame them for bringing in someone to give a lecture, and then asking him to not bring up religion.
And seriously Ash, we get it. You don't need to make a thread about everything that pisses you off relating to religion. I understand that you really like debating about religion and all, but not many people here really care about all of these stories about how oppressed Atheists are. I really like MMA, but you don't see me making a thread in Link of the Day every time there's a UFC event, because I realize that I'm one of the few people here that actually cares about it.
edit: lmao within a minute of posting this, Ash has already made another thread about him seeing Richard Dawkins.

View Profile Oh gee, I wonder who has more respect in the education world, Oklahoma or Oxford?
I have little respect for Dawkins, but even I know he's over qualified for this. The rep should be kissing his ass, not telling him what to do.

I concur

double concur'd. I don't make an NFL thread for every Redskins game. I mean, the 'skins signed Albert Haynesworth this offseason, who was by far the most talented free agent out there. THAT'S HUGE. They signed him for 100 million dollars. And I haven't even mentioned it once before now.

View Profile Sorry about posting about this so much, I was just really goddammed exited.
Anyway, note that this was a State Representative, not the University, that was trying to prevent him from coming, and also the talk was about evolution, not religion.
Dawkins actually opened the talk by responding to this stuff, and he was quite funny when he did it.

View Profile Actually, I do read the bible quite often. I have read it all the way through twice in my life, once when I was a Chrsitian, and again when I became an atheist. Now, I pick it up now and then to peruse interesting stories or to check up on some scripture I hear about.
