I like mysteries, so I'm gonna look into this one.

Brief Info:
Speculation over this website has spread like a virus, biggest guess is a teaser for a Valve Movie.
http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/

Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU_reTt7Hj4

I don't believe this, but I'm looking into it. I'll update this thread with whatever information I find for it.

Discovery #1: Source Code Message
A quick look at the source of the code reveals a two line message.

I'll look into it some more. Maybe it's a quote from somewhere.

Discovery #2: Credits Coding
When you place you mouse over the box, it flashes red and question marks appear over some letters in the credits, like so.

Image

After a look, I have formed the letters in order they appear. The question marks seemed to only cover half of the letters sometimes, I've marked these in parenthesis. Here is what I got
OTION NT(S) ST(E) WHATS IN THE BOX
RS TI(M) CREA TEV (R)O (E)CTOR PHY BAUT MSMI
S TH IMS(M) EEU(W) S(M) DITO(R) MS(M) C(E) E(C) (M)IT (U)T
DDITIO(N) R EREL U(R) OOS(T) D A(R)

Here is a closeup of the original and "marked" credits for anyone who wants to check them out.

Discovery #3: CSS Pages
In the websites source code it refers to these 2 CSS pages. I know diddly about CSS but some guy at FP produced something which seems to have some kind of CSS coding, each one different from the other.

Discovery #4: Four Digits
The randomizing four digit "code" between the credits and the glowing box is some kind of Javascript application. Unless I'm reading the source code wrong it seems to consist of one line.

Discovery #5: Black Mesa Reference
During the video, in the scrolling text at the bottom a reference to Black Mesa can be seen.

Image

It reads: "A largest single collapse in history since Black Mesa"

This implies Black Mesa has already happened and anyone familiar with the Half-Life time line will know if this disproves a Half-Life movie. When Black Mesa collapsed basically the entire world collapse since the combine and other aliens moved quick. This line makes it sound like Black Mesa 'collapsed' and things got better after thaT. However, the 'Blackhole' seen in the movie could be the citadel falling apart and they scrolling text at the bottom could be some kind of combine news scroller addressing about Black Mesa but why would they do that? Hmmm...

Discovery #6: The "Anti-Box"
An image that is like the homepage of the site but mostly white and lightly colored can be found within the source code. Link to the image since the image is too big: http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/anti.gif

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two boxes. (Not the 'evil' box has some sort of letters in it?)
Image

There seems to be writing in the background I tried reading it and typed it up to the best of my ability. Maybe someone can crack open photoshop and see what they can get. Here is the message, a -?- means its obstructed by the cube and brackets mean its highlighted.

Apparently the cube has something to do with creating energy...energy that can triumph solar power and provide this energy with a high stability.

Discovery #7: Randomizing 4 Digit Code
Looking at the code that creates the randomizing 4 digit code, we find out that it isnt so random.
bullshitArray.push("0001");
bullshitArray.push("WSAD");
bullshitArray.push("134G");
bullshitArray.push("ASDF");
bullshitArray.push("123A");
bullshitArray.push("1234");
bullshitArray.push("5223");
bullshitArray.push("QWER");
bullshitArray.push("FASG");
bullshitArray.push("4213");
bullshitArray.push("UUUU");
bullshitArray.push("READ");
bullshitArray.push("FAST");
bullshitArray.push("JFSD");
bullshitArray.push("2123");
bullshitArray.push("BOXR");
bullshitArray.push("SAGA");
bullshitArray.push("JFSD");
bullshitArray.push("2123");
bullshitArray.push("6335");
bullshitArray.push("2347");
bullshitArray.push("2678");
bullshitArray.push("7856");
bullshitArray.push("1111");

All these codes come up, so the numbers aren't random.

Discovery #8: Interview With The Directo
r
A video of an interview with two guys part of this project have apparently given an interview on a foreign TV show, I'm not sure what language they're speaking but if someone can find out and translate that'd be great.

Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8rRb4z0gVA

I'll look into it when I can, if I'm wrong on anything or you found something new tell me and I'll fix/update it.

Also, sure this may just be some big ol' prank like Eon8 (Anyone remember that shit? Haha) but who cares? This investigation is all in good fun.

Thanks to:
Broseph, for noticing the code when touching the box
Beta, for the anti-box image
Steyene, for the 4 digit codes
Scorpioxxx, for lots of code from the website

I'm sure that if you simplified each equation/formula you wouldn't actually learn anything. You could possibly find out what M and n equal but it probably wouldn't prove anything.

It says "ATTAINABLENESS" at the bottom, it's right under the cube. It's really faded into the background.

Maybe that means the energy in the cube is easy to attain?
I'm not sure, but this is pretty interesting.

Can you cut it out in paint or photoshop? I don't see it.

1. Make website with blank cube with scribbling around it.
2. make certain words flash that can be read
3. make it look mysterious, use nonsense words over and over again
4. wait
5. laugh at teenagers who think it means something

This just looks like the Half Life shorts 'effects test' that we saw a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe they struck a deal with Valve and are shooting the movie in conjunction with the release of Half Life 3 as a compliment to the game.

Well that's my best guess.

Also I saw Black written on a bag maybe a alluding to the Black Box that was never released.

Iunno.

Forgot the whole thing of making a movie that seemed to involved renting out a large part of a neighborhood to be empty as well as renting or buying a bus with TV screens in it, renting a laboratory setting for the beginning and among all this have the permission to fire off pyrotechnics in these rented areas.

Yeah...I can see how you skipped that.

Go to the real image and search in the circled area. It's there, just really blurred in.

Or better yet save the image and zoom in on that spot with an image editing program. Easier to see.

Small towns aren't that hard to do, you don't have to rent off a neighbor hood, just get 5 friends with cars and bikes, park them weird, do a 1 shot thing of the guy running with a camera through the street for 2 minutes. In small towns early in the morning there is almost no one on streets.

as well as renting or buying a bus with TV screens in it,

The TV's were probably special effects, don't know about the bus.

renting a laboratory setting for the beginning

Get a desk, a computer, lots of papers, put it in a well lighted room, and you've got a lab. As for the thing he oppened to get the cube out of looked like a barbeque, lol.

and among all this have the permission to fire off pyrotechnics in these rented areas.

All of that stuff was special effects. There was no pyrotechnics involved.

Yeah...I can see how you skipped that.

lolk.

At the bottom of the anti-box it has "2007" written there, How old is this thing?
