I think they can punish you if you were wearing school uniform at the time because it might damage the school's reputation. Otherwise no, they have no right.

Technically they can't force you to go to detention anyway because it's not part of the standard education that the school offers and it would be holding someone against their will - legally kidnapping. What they can do is refuse to educate you if you don't turn up, ie. expell you.

they can't punish you unless you were wearing a school uniform if it relates directly to someone or something from that school.

However, the chances of, if you behaving bad outside school, you would probably not behave well inside school and that would lead to a detention..

The school has authority to give you detention whether you like it or not...

I guess it depends on which country you live in (I.E whether school is a service or a right). If the school is a service, I find it perfectly reasonable of the school to expel you for something you did outside school, but not give you detention.

Depend where you live I guess.
They don't do it here but if you do something during school hours, even when you're not on school property, you're their responsibility, thus under their authority.

A good example would be a school trip, right?

I think Red's post could give some examples of what happened in his school, so the circumstances could be seen. I don't know enough to judge the situation you or your friends are/were in. Right now I can guess that he wasn't on a school trip, but most likely after school or on a weekend. Are you still their responsibility then?

Of course not. But he says "not on school property" not "outside school hours".

Okay then... I'm talking about on a Sunday or Saturday. Heres an example of something that just recently happened. Someone shot someone with a terrible 240 fps airsoft pistol, and their mom found out and told the school. Then got an ISS (In School Suspension) the next day. They shouldn't be able to do that it's BS.

Let me first say... fail-at-maternity.
The school should not be the one too punish, that's the mothers job and she's a bad parent for not taking responsibility. But then again, when the parent is unfit, the school is the ideal institution to handle it.
But I agree that it's ridiculous that the school is the one to take responsibility rather than the parent.

"Oh no, someone shot my little girl with an airsoft pistol, and instead of talking to the shooter's parents, or telling my daughter what she should do, I'll tell the school!" My thoughts are the same as Kaas, I guess.
