Because I am interested to see what people think would happen, if there was a power vacuum all of a sudden.

It would happen like this:

I would become crippled, and the doctor says "You will be, crippled for....REST OF LIFE11!!!!PWNDDD HAHA!!!"

Then I would somehow take his shelves and bash him to the ground.

I would then crawl into a hole, and live like that.

Actually, humanity would be a lot easier with everyone being crippled, no bullies, except for mean words, you know.

America itself can't be crippled easily.

Even if terrorists bum rush nukes and wipe a state off the map, the other states will ok. There are also few natural disasters short of an asteroid strike that could damage multiple states. After that, the rest of the states will form a stronger bond and invest in national defense (or disaster relief).

But yea, speculating is kind of silly.

Crippling doesn't have to be done by terrorism or natural disasters. Look at the way all the other superpowers have gone. Rome collapsed due to internal corruption and rebellion with simultaneous invasions from the Vandals. Britain decided to be nice and give back the colonies to the people who rightfully owned them, whilst at the same time being economically drained from two European wars. Russia went down to civil war and because when people are controlled by fear it's a bad idea to say to them "actually, we've decided to be nice from now on. What do you want to do?"

Notably absent from terrorism and disaster.

On the argument before, I personally don't think there is ANY nation in the world that's the 'best'. What are the conditions one should meet to be the 'best'?

You're on dangerous ground, Automaton. Continue and there's a very good chance you'll be Manthinated along with all who reply.

Before I bail out of the thread completely, I suspect it would be judged on either GDP/capita, HDI, military strength, or quality of life. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I left the iron on *hasty exit*

OK then, back on topic. I think it would really depend on the conditions of the "catastrophe". Personally, I think the US would act as any other country would, the only difference being they would have more money to spend to do so, though even that wouldn't be too much with the recession at the moment.

Actually, there are many Austrailians and British one here. This thread is about America though, as the majority of the forum is American.

It depends on when this happens. If it happens right now, I don't see China changing much. They wouldn't attack America, because then they would have the entire UN to deal with. Now, if this were to happen in 20 years, China would be the world leader in just about everything. They still wouldnt attack, because they wouldnt have much of a reason to.
Oh, and Israel would probly cease being a country, because we wouldnt be there to back them up.
