Also, Ubuntu is a pretty popular linux distro, it runs a lot like windows so it's easy to adjust to. If you want a really really minimalistic operating system, possibly for an older machine, try DSL (Damn Small Linux).

Ubuntu also is debugged fairly frequently and is a nice little OS, though DSL is nice, at times.
