what if this was engineered by the US government in an attempt to make a couple bucks? what if they made the disease and overinflated the media so people would freak out and buy ass-loads of cures and vaccines and facemasks, giving the government extra money? what if they are creating stronger versions, so people will buy more cures? what if it turns so strong that it re-animates dead bodies and turns them into zombies? or adapts to all the world's food, starving us all out?

just a creative thought.
