It is possible to switch the addiction on to something less damaging. What you need to do is, whenever he feels that he needs acid, give him a cup of coffee (or a bar of chocolate, or an elastic band to play with. Anything will do really as long as it's consistant). Make sure to completely take his mind off the acid while he drinks his coffee/whatever, but don't do it in a bad way (ie. punching him repeatedly), you'll need to distract him positively (ie. porn). In theory it should lead to the brain associating a subsidance in the cravings with the administration of coffee/whatever.

Make sure he knows what you're doing and why so that even if the theory is bullshit you have a chance of catching him with the placebo. Admitedly, it's a bit like leaving a blind man with a butterfly net under the tightrope, but it's still a chance.
