I made another one of those, but those are the only two robots I've ever made. I think I might take it up as a hobby. Is it normally expensive?

That depends on what you do it with. If you join a FIRST team, you usually get sponsers and stuff, and get to make cool stuff. If you are younger, you can join an FLL team. Older, FVC or FRC.

FLL-FIRST Lego League. Build with lego NXT's and RCX's (robot computers) using lego, make an autonomous robot that completes a challange. Under age 13? only.

FVC-FIRST Vex Challange. Build a metal robot with limited parts that is larger than a LEGO one. This is controlled by the person. I don't know the age limit.

FRC-FIRST Robotics Competition. The big daddy. Build a full, 5-7 foot tall robot weighing in at about 120 lbs. Controlled both autonomosly and by player, there is also a new device called the IR sensor which allows some control during autonomous. Challenge is on a 27 X 54 foot field, different challange every year. There is always 3 teams on an aliance, red or blue. Work with your aliance to kick ass. Great one to join.

These are all usually sponsered by a lot of people. FLL is cheap, and doesnt need a lot of sponsorship, but is for younger kids. FVC is cool, but I don't know a lot about it. FRC is expensive, but not for you. Lots of sponsorships from everywhere, cool robot.

Or you could go solo, where LEGO robots are about a lot of money -under $500, though.
Vex is about...i dunno
other robots are a hellofalot to pay for. Our robot costs over 10,000$ every year.
But don't go solo, cause you don't get to join the fun competitions. I would join your local FRC team.

Smart enough for it? C'mon, I am a moron, and I do it. And Cereal Man, if you want to do robotics I highly suggest joining an FRC team. Try searching for something on www.usfirst.org

Oh. This year, we didn't even do that, we just went around the track. But it isn't boring. We get to get out of school! And even if your robot sucks, you still have a good time.

The competition was ****ing exciting.

Couldn't you make a robot that does that in a few hours?

Every year we have a kickass drive train, and that took a while. Plus, we tried to make a lift for the trackballs, but it didn't like us. We got it to work, but on our alliance team, we were better off letting the other 2 teams score with the 2 trackballs, and having us play defense. Our drive train took several weeks, too. And we almost didn't have time to program it in the end.

This man has a point.

I always thought it'd be something interesting to do but I never really actually thought it was worth getting into.

yes, i know that. I thought it was more like, 3-5 kids get in a group, and each one has a robot to build, for fun and shit.

not everyone in the class builds one stupid shitty robot for some crappy tournament.
