Are we special?
We're told this all the time when we go to school. Us, our friends, our family, we're all special and unique and different from everyone else. We're all good at things and we have our talents. Our parents told us we were special and we believed them.
Scientifically speaking, this is true. No one shares the same genes as you. No one's tongue-print or fingerprints are the same as yours. But does this make us, as humans, special? I think not. The fact is, everyone has differing fingerprints. Everyone has different talents and personalities. It's not like everyone has the same genes but you. We're called "special" and "unique". But are we really? I mean, not everyone can be special and unique. The point of being "unique" is that there is no one else like you. If everyone is unique then- you get my point.
So why did/do we believe that we are so special? Is it the movies? Until the age of 14 I thought that "maybe I could be like Spider-Man", or "maybe I'll be like Neo." All these movies are about average Joe kids becoming super heroes and "unique" people. In fact, when I was 12 I thought that given a sword or something, I could take on a room full of bad guys. We see Spider-Man take on a room full of baddies. We see Aragorn do it, too. These are all seemingly normal people who turn out "special". And we all think we can be like them. Or we are them.
What I'm getting at here is why, as humans, we think we're so special. How are we any different from horses on this world? I'm going to leave religion out of this - in fact, I would like an Atheist viewpoint on this as all other religions point out that "humans are special as they are in God's image" etc. Do you think we really have a purpose here, Atheists? Are we special? Someone once said that we're just worm meat. Are we?
Debate.
