Way to ruin a ****ing good day. We still haven't received District 9.
I hate this country.
At least we still have Inglorious Basterds.

9 will be as bland as the short that it is based off of.

Well I saw it today. No spoilers right now.
The animation was very nice, of course. You really do get a lot of eye candy in this movie. The atmosphere is certainly done well. However, this is definitely a trailer movie. The writing was weak, and the overall plot seemed really boiled down. The movie relies a lot on the "rebelling against the evil machines" idea which is actually a bit cliche. It could have been used much better.
SPOIL SPOIL SPOIL
For example, the evil machine was a faceless robot. It had all the intelligence of the scientist, but the film never touches that at all. Why doesn't the scientist explain why a copy of his own brain caused the machines to turn on humans. Why not go thematically into the battle of the soul vs. intelligence. This movie is obviously not a battle of soul vs. machines because they are technically all machines. And in my humble opinion, the ending was shallow.

I'll see it for the art direction.
Sep 10, 2009 2:00 AM #485771
I'll see it because Tim Burton ****ing directed it.
Just for the respect of the man.
Just for the respect of the man.

Tim Burton definitely didn't direct it. They just slapped his name on there because he's a producer, I believe.
Sep 10, 2009 2:16 AM #485780
Pretty much. I try to forget that Tim Burton is involved, just because they are using his name as a selling point.

Producing it's even harder than directing, I give him that..

Quote from WtfProducing it's even harder than directing, I give him that..
Erm... No, it's not. Really. A producer does VERY little work in Hollywood: they might pitch the film, toss money at it, and then they're just there to give creative input. Directing requires you to oversee everything all at once, and that includes making sure actors are saying their lines right, explaining your vision to the art department, the CG department, the sound department, etc.
A good example of how directing is hard work is just by looking at Peter Jackson. He lost a lot of weight during the filming of Lord of the Rings and King Kong without trying just because of how much work he was doing. That's why he didn't want to direct the Halo film: executive producer wouldn't be so taxing. His latest directorial effort, The Lovely Bones, was very low in terms of work: no epic shots of New Zealand, no crowds of actors in orc costumes, just a few actors and actresses in a small film based on a small but exceptional book.
