Yeah same. I have no specific taste in genres or even artists, but single tracks.

Rock =/= metal. Get your definitions straight if you decide to make a thread about genres. Goddamnit.

I like anything that sounds good to me.

Err, Metal is a genre of Rock music. Get your definitions straight before you decide to put down other people.

At this point, rock is an umbrella term for genres, not really a genre in itself. With the amount of subgenres out there there's not a single band that can simply be described as "rock".

Metal has tons of sub-genres in itself, trying to list it under the same umbrella term that would include things like surf-rock, classic rock, post rock and other genres that don't sound anything like metal would be useless. Mantha's right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_music

Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock.

Exilement is right that Rock is an umbrella term. Metal fits under that umbrella.
Yes, it does sounds different than many of the other sub genres of rock, but it also has very clear similarities. One is the use of distortion, which originated in traditional English rock bands such as The Kinks and also in the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The basic ensemble is the same (a traditional rock ensemble consisting of a drummer, bassist, guitarist and vocalist), and the drums also have pretty much the same basics (the tempo has often been upped, the feel is harder and there is more focus on cymbals, but the roots still remain the same).

In his poll the OP posted "Rock (any kind)". Metal is a kind of rock, different as it may be to other "kinds" of rock, and thus fits.

The roots. The roots for both metal and surfrock are to be found somewhere in the "Rock around the Clock" era. It's all the same, really. Without that, there would have never been Rock'n'Roll, then no Hard Rock, then no metal. Neither would there have been Punk, Hardcore Punk, Emo and Screamo. Neither Poprock, grunge and post-grunge...
Also, the "basics" are fairly different, as I look at it. When, say, a poprock song, which would be on the same basics, isn't complicated at the drum end and focuses on filigrane playing if anything, metal focuses on pounding, speed and just loudness. Those are two different basics.

Oh, the drum styles are much more similar than for example Jazz drums and traditional rock drums. As you said, metal is harder, faster, and more brutal, but the basic rhythms you develop your beats from are similar.
In Jazz you have the swing feel, and much more focus on the ride, pauses and off-beats. Rock and metal, however, usually has a much more standard, straight forward 4/4 drum beat, and it's the same basis rhythm that most beats are developed out of. You know the one with hi hats on each quarter note, bass drum on 1, and snare drum on 3. It's the first beat most drummers are taught, and it can be seen everywhere (both in its basic, as well as in developed forms) in both rock and metal music.
