Down here they invite boys that reach 18 years of age to the base I guess and give them free food and show them around. Or that's how I heard.
I think it should be neccessary if there's a war going on. Otherwise it should be voluntarily.

No i think that is what we should do. there are people who complain about there gov. and how f*cked up everything is. but there just talking. how about you give back for everything there giving you. "when 25% of our workers didn't function, we called it a Great Depression. Now, what do we call 50% of our students not functioning? A Greater Depression?". society is taking a turn towards a dead end and the other countries are just waiting to make there move towards " The land of opportunity."

I don't think it should be mandatory what so ever. Even if there's a war going on.
People have the right to say they don't want something, unless they brake the law while doing so.

Anyone in that age group can get drafted unless they meet certain exceptions. So, uh... this pretty much already happens.
(Note: Special emphasis on can since "the draft" has not been used in a while but is still legal.)

Every American man and woman and hermaphrodite should feel honoured to be obliged to join the army - specifically, the British army - as a way of showing their gratitude to us for granting them the privilege of setting their own laws and tax rates.

Actually you didn't let us start our OWN land you just taxed us on whatever land we found.Quote from ZedEvery American man and woman and hermaphrodite should feel honoured to be obliged to join the army - specifically, the British army - as a way of showing their gratitude to us for granting them the privilege of setting their own laws and tax rates.

To be fair, you were us at time.
Trolling over: I think military style training should be part of the school curiculum, mainly for reducing obesity and inmproving physical fitness and secondarily because I've seen the "defence of the country" argument in gun debates so many times it might as well be made valid. There's no need to force people into the army unless there is actually a chance of losing a war due to lack of manpower though.

Or how about we stop building massive armies and start focusing on world endeavors? Seriously, what do we need massive amounts of troops for these days anyways? The world changed after WWII, there will never be a conflict like that ever again, only small-scale stuff like we have going right now.
There are sooooooo many better things we can dump our money into than the goddamn troops. I mean holy shit, of the entire worlds' spending on military the USA spends 42% of it (next highest country is at 5%). I think we are just fine.

Yeah, there is never going to be anything like a D-day again. An AC-130 or some satellite guided missle will just come in, and maybe they will send a group of guys in to secure the area. Times have changed, the infrantry man has become less of a warrior, and more of a "Come here and check all these bodies" person.
