What's the point of rap?All rappers do is sing about how much their life sucks.
Heard of the blues before? You know, the genre of music where they sing about how much life sucks?
Some rap is poetry, there's no reason it shouldn't be studied.

View Profile In my opinion, some of the best poetry of our generation can be found in rap. I don't see why it would be worse to study than any other form of literature. In fact, in order to get a full understanding of literature, rap would have to be studied.

View Profile I can't see any rap music being played in schools because there isn't a single rap song that doesn't include something about sex, drugs or swearing. infact ther is a swear word every 15 seconds in a rap song.

Not every rap artist is this way. Infact, there are a handful of them that I like. Look up "Immortal Technique". The only artists you are used to hearing are the ones being forced upon us through the media. This is why I tend to lean toward underground music than what is being played on the radio.

View Profile I personally can't stand the mainstream rap artists. Everyday during my english class I can hear people discussing how Gucchi mane, Lil wayne, Drake, Jay Z, are the "best" rapper. I do love the underground rap, like Immortal Technique. That really tell a story. I'm listening to Dance With The Devil by Immortal Technique right now. If anyone wants to send me a PM with more great artists like Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Trick, Ect ect. I love you long time :D

View Profile Stephen, just because you're a bit scared to appreciate rap it doesn't mean you can make generalised accusations over it i.e. "omg it's always about sexes and gangbanging shitty lives and stupid black people". I used to think exactly like you do, but try actually listening to rap for once, then you can make less ignorant claims against it. I mean, I'm not a big fan of rap either, but I appreciate it for being entertaining at the very least. Along with most other kinds of music which many people hate for being too "conformist". As long as you enjoy it it should be fine.

While I agree with this, some of the worst poetry of our generation can also be found in rap.

A tip for you Stephen: it's spelled "studying," not "studding". shithead
The fact that students like rap doesn't necessarily mean they're idiots, it just means that those kids have another more enjoyable way of learning about English.
Listen to "Auditorium" by Mos Def and Slick Rick, you'll have a different opinion on rap.
ages for high school in the U.S. range from 14-18, btw

View Profile Immortal Technique is one paranoid mother****er.
But, more to the point, how did this go from "should rap be aloud to be studied in English class?" to the differences between underground rap and mainstream rap? We don't even know what artist Stephen124859 is talking about. If it were some idiot like Lil Wayne (or any rapper with the prefix 'Lil'), then I'd question the sanity of the English teacher, unless (s)he was using it to demonstrate the worst possible example of English poetry.
But if it were one of the actual talented emcees, then maybe it'd be alright as long as it was quality poetry being studied. It all really comes down to the specific content being studied, but I'll bet Stephen isn't listening hard enough to be able to provide us with this content, so I'll have to remain neutral.

View Profile It was Tupac, widely regarded as a poet
Also, I think stephen just needs to do more "studding" in general

This is true, but the same could be said for any other type of medium. Some of the worst literature of our generation can be found in novels, short stories and normal aa bb poems. Doesn't they shouldn't be studied. The fact that some of the worst poetry of our generation can be found in rap, doesn't mean we should refrain from studying the best of it.
