Not that a religious motivation would mean we should bar them, because that would still be illegal.

That's not even slightly true.
If you put "Islamic fundamentalist" under the religion box there's no way in hell you're joining the US army since your beliefs are conflicting with the job you have to do.

I don't think Islamic fundamentalists are in direct conflict with what the US army is doing. To the best of my knowledge they are just engaged in peacekeeping in Afghanistan and Iraq at the moment. Not the complete extermination of all Islamic fundamentalists. That would be like the holocaust. Just because someone follows the Q'ran literally doesn't make them an insurgent or terrorist.

If I knew my commander was a muslim, I would make a point to avoid him at all costs

Would you also avoid using any public transport in London, nay, anywhere in Europe, and going into any skyscrapers whilst somewhere in the world there was a Muslim flying an aeroplane?

No. But it does mean they can't do their job.

Ok. Quite why they'd want to join in the first place is beyond me though. I suppose you could have an all-muslim regiment. We've done it with some of the Commonwealth regiments.

Because ALL muslims think like that.

No, they don't.

If a muslim can bring himself to live in America, which is a Western country as we all know to be hated by Extremist-Muslim terrorists, he won't think like that that easily.
And if they'd enlist for the Army of a Western country, in this case the USA, that means they'd actively protect that Western country.

That muslim would never fly a plane into a building. Never.

I think I should just throw this out there. These guys are Muslims. I don't think they plan on committing Jihad anytime soon.

As you probably heard about the Fort Hood shooting, the shooter was a Muslim. So should Muslims not be allowed to serve in the army?
