Here's a good tip that I kind of go by with effects:
"Don't use filters until you're good enough".
That is applied to every type of effect, because most people tend to use them at strange times, you did. the head shouldn't be blurred when it gets blasted into the air like that. In fact, it shouldn't have gone straight up. I like to move the head about 3 spaces (V, Shift+arrow keys) then use the lasso tool, l, to break it apart into pieces and make them symbols. Why make the head stay together? lol.
When you're good at colorful, powerful explosions and effects, then you sahould find out that you don't have to blur them un less they're out of focus or there are light sources. You should never have to blur anything not relating to the explosion. Such as a head or a bouncy, spinning arm piece in your case.
