oh i mean don't porridge, and an unknown figure, whose face is an avatar, and the crown phrase - signatures. In the circle of well-known to you people to play once comfortable.

Anyone still playing pokerstars? Starting to get into it, not very good, mind you. Don't know how to play with particular people but PM me if you want a game.

this thread is super old but whatever. as my buddy socks will tell you all i do these days is play poker online. i play at fulltilt poker. anyway, most things in this thread make me lol as they are preconcieved misconceptions. anyway, point is i searched poker, found this thread and felt like commenting, and since i probably know more about poker than most of you i'll probably clear some things in the thread up

Oh I used to love poker. Back in the good ol' days my friends and I used to play a lot of poker together for fun, without the gambling. I was pretty good, but as time passed I stopped playing it.

tbh...if you wernt playing for money, you probably wern't very good. i used to play for play money...thought i was good, sucked really

Poker is the best game known to man. My friends and I play regularly, generally it's a £20 buy in, ten man game, winner takes 50%, second place 30%, third place 20%. Best advice I can give you is not to overvalue your hands pre-flop. If you haven't got two high cards or a pair of sixes or higher, fold it without even paying the blinds.

you seem to have decent poker knowledge. your requirements are super tight tho, i never fold pocket 5's without attempting to setmine. seeing the flop to try and hit that other 5 is so valuable. ofcourse i'd fold it to a big bet preflop

Poker is a game about psychology. You need to read your competitors' reactions and tells in order to determine whether or not your hand can beat theirs.

When playing poker online, you don't see your opponents at all. You have no clue what they are thinking, and have no way of determining what kind of hand they have. It becomes a game of luck, and poker is not supposed to be a game of luck.

In short, you can't ****ing play poker seriously online.

very untrue, live tells are overrated, mostly you can get the same amount/more tells online. basically, the amount they bet and how often they check are the main things to look out for, do they bet big or small with a big hand? finding stuff like that out is priceless, in short, you can play poker seriously online and there are many who play for a living online.

You can calculate odds, which is as big a part of poker as the psychology. You can also remember what kinds of hands your opponents have placed bets on before, and use that.
But I agree, though. Poker online is quite meaningless. For me the fun in in poker lies in being with friends, playing seriously but at the same time joking around, and getting more drunk as the game progresses.

playing to make money, online is better, playing for fun, live is better...

oh, hey fitzy

Yeah I started playing poker weekly with friends, for $5-10 buy-ins, but I started playing online poker about two years ago. I got pretty good, agreed with fitzy that most of you guys are generalizing about poker.

I only played with real money once but I really didn't enjoy it, most people won't even call the blinds if they don't have anything better than pocket 7's and even when you do get decent cards, they only bet a few cents. It was a pretty different dynamic so I wound up losing the $20, though I might try it again

How much money have you won, fitzy?

hmmm...about $2.5K online, probably a little more maybe $2.6K. had a couple of big scores, $10 tournament came 2nd out of 705 for $1058, $5 tournament came 1st of 697 for $837 and $3 tournament came 1st out of like 290 for about $220. other than that i usually play 4 tables of 9 person tournaments for 5 hours a day....kinda trying to go semi pro ^_^ thats the dream...well pro is the dream but i think that might be too hard.

and your comment that people dont do anything without pocket 7's+...i dunno i have completely different experiences, you cant get a pot heads up cuz people call the blinds and then call massive raises with just about everything (like almost anything suited...they think 'Ooooo i can make a flush if i see 3 diamonds i call'. however, they're pretty easy to beat cuz they call with anything but they rarely manage to go ahead of your pocket aces or pocket kings on the flop so you can often take them for alot of chips

Yeah, I tend to find the less experienced players much too willing to call anything. They just don't appreciate sunk costs when they've failed to hit so they'll call anyway because "oh well I've put so much in already I might as well". That gets really annoying when you want to bluff.

I should probably mention I was playing rather low stakes (5/10 cent blinds, I think). That's odd, though, I played through Full Tilt as well and generally on 9 person tables every single hand was between 2-3 people. It got old really fast.

yeah i play low stakes...cash games i don't play much but when i do the blinds are 10 cents and 25 cents. i mostly play $2-$11 tournaments, with the occasional $22.

you say every hand was between 2-3 people, do you want more than that? do you want 9 players seeing every flop? i dont really understand your logic :P. although the trend is that the average number of players seeing any given flop - the higher the number the worse the players are i.e. good for us but when IM in a hand i often dont want more than 2 callers, ruins the ability to bluff and when you cant bluff you have to hit a hand. the good thing is that when you DO hit a hand in those situations you often get paid off by a worse hand. alot of players cant let go of second pair even though they obviously should. and alot cant fold pocket kings on A high boards etc

My logic came from playing free money poker online for two years, I got used to playing tables with a ton of people playing at a time.. I guess the ideology doesn't carry over but still, I found it boring compared to the experience of playing for free.

Maybe I just don't take it as seriously as you do. Though I can see why you'd only want 2-3 people calling per hand.

well...since i play to make money i obviously take it seriously...since i want it to be a partial source of income in a couple of years it makes sense that i would rather it be more profitable than 'fun' (although...i find profitibility is very fun...but im talking about your definition of fun =]). and btw...i dont want 2-3 callers usually, in general i would prefer 0-1 to 2 or 3. even with AA i dont want any more than 2 generally speaking
