Actually I went and checked and it seems they are going to and throw in another crapload of fillers. So it probably won't be continuing until later.

If you cut out all the fillers the show would be like fifty episodes.
That's why I stopped watching it, permanently, besides asking for them not to have five fillers for every one episode is asking for way to much.

Well the fillers don't really appear until 168 - 189 and then again at 131 - 155 (also probably 156 - 174, from what I have heard). From episode 1 - 167 there weren't any that I know of, accept maybe the bount arc, but seeing as ichigo continues to refer to Kariya means that it did contribute to the storyline. Apart from that, although some episodes don't show ichigo, they are still related to the storyline.

Accept 168-189, 131 - 155 ect. which just got shoved in there with no real relevance to the main storyline. I guess Tite Kubo is buying more time in order to release a shitload of story related episodes later.

So in these filler episodes, does anything actually happen? Do the characters even acknowledge their existence in the proper episodes?

I have no idea really. Its kind of like anime movies. You watch them, they have no relevance to the main story, and you never hear about them afterwards.

From what I gather, the fillers are separate stories that doesn't really have anything to do with the main story. Sort of like side quests in computer games. Lots of stuff can happen, but the characters are static: they will not develop new skills or change in any way, as it would be weird if the story continued from where it left in the main story, and suddenly the main character has learned new super moves from nowhere or formed a romantic relationship with one of the other characters without any explanation.

I hated the Bount arc, the Zanpaktou arc, and now they're coming with more of this crap.

I really don't see why people think it's vasto lorde. How could ichigo become a vasto lord when he was never a menos to begin with. Honestly, maybe you could class him as a hollow seeing as he has their powers, but I don't recall ever hearing anything to do with gillians adjuchas ect.
