Go back up and check for the time of day, if there still light, go see if you can find some coal in a cliff, else, either punch a tree or mine, whatever you fell like doing.

Somewhat ontopic, tried the infinite map test thing yet?

Also, why don't people on Indev mode just lock themselves in a hole and stay there? That would guarantee victory I think.

Use the workbench and make a wooden sword and shield for protection from the monsters who live underground.

through your amazing technological skill you made a workbench and a wooden pickaxe! You can now mine stone. But youll need a better tool to get the tougher stuff. Where do you wish to mine?

Monsters spawn in the dark, ie, any area of your hole that was just dark enough would let them spawn, if you kept it well lit then yes, it works.

You create a wooden sword and head to the surface and yep, there is stillsome light out. It's around noon.

You walk a little bit away from your home and find some cliffs, but there doesnt seem to be any coal in them. But the sturdy rock walls seem like they could have a small home carved out of them.

Carve a small home! And then use crates and whatever that other funky block is to make it pretty.

You begin to carve a doorway but run into something unexpected...

Iron ore! What a pleasant surprise! You still need coal to smelt it and a better tool to mine it.

You try making another door and get in a little bit when your pickaxe breaks! The workbench is back ar your dirt hobble which isnt too far away. Maybe you should bring it to your new homes construction site? Perhaps a rock pickaze would be stronger than wood. (Speaking of which you're running a tad low on)

Make a rock axe and chop some trees while it's still light.

Go grab all your old shit from your other hole base and set up the torches and such here so you can atleast see and have a bench to make stuff. Then, you need wood, a stone pick or 3 and coal in that order.
