Platform/SideScroller/Guns and Weapons??

hey everyone..... i would really like to make a platform shooter game and im not to sure on how to go about doing so.. i know everyone always says start simple and i have done several "simple" games so to speak. i can do basic platform games with levels, vcam and whatever ...maze games, and ive done a really short escape game...but now ive decided to go beyond simple.......

so without further ado...

Question 1!
Which do you suggest for making a platform based game...sidescrollin or vcam?? im tired of getting things to "just work" this is going to be my first "real game" and im planning on submitting it to newgrounds or something wen its finished. so i want it to be the real deal stuff...

Question 2!
Either way, whether i use vcam or sidescrollin for this game, i still would like to learn how to use sidescrolling and i cant figure out how to use it. ive seen some tutorials on it but i either cant figure it out, or the whole tutorial ends up being ac3. if anybody can explain it to me or give me some links to decent tutorials for it.... it would be great...

and last but probably the one i want to know most..

Question 3!
So, my last question is weapons/guns....im wanting to no how to make a gun or a weapon in general follow my mouse but still "move along" with my character

or even how to make a simple inventory system....it would only need to be for 2 at a time cuz i only want 2 weapons on my character at a time....i plan on having more than 2 weapons available though, so i dont think the alpha thing will work, ive never really tried it though.....

i want my final game to be alot like wpnfire (the video above) what would you suggest i do to get close to it.....plz plz plz help me out guys....lemme kno what you think of all of my questions...you dont have to explain it yourself, if you could tell me of a decent tutorial for any that would be great...... TY!!! :D:D:D XD (i say all that in advance just incase i forget to tell it to those who help me out).....

You should be able to figure these basic problems out on your own.. if you can't then you're not ready to start making "real games". Do more exercises and experiments, follow more tutorials, expand your programming knowledge.

As daunting as the task may seem that Illusion points out here, it will pay off in the future.

I believe there is a basic platform tutorial somewhere, possibly made by the pirate, about three screen lengths in detail. I'll go look.

Edit: Oops, I was thinking of the space shooter tutorial.
