I have a faint idea of what it is, but I am uncertain....

Dark matter is what scientist believe to have mass but does not have a physical form. We have little prove of dark matter but its the only thing that explains why stars move at the same speed around a galaxy. If you look at some pictures of galaxies you can see how the gravity of dark matter can effect them. its a weird phenomena

hmmm.....When a star dies does it go through stages such as imploding, white dwarf and exploding or is it a for of these stages for each star?

Well a star like our own wont go super nova...instead it will grow into a red giant then shrink again to fuse helium in the core, then it will grow once more and the outer layer will drift into space leaving a white dwarf. A star like Betelgeuse will go type II super nova and either leave a black hole OR a neutron star.

I think that the whole theory of dark matter is irrelevant. Its really an example of how much we don't know. According to our calculations, the galaxy doesn't have enough gravity to hold together. Rather than admitting that we may be wrong or we don't know something, they create an idea called dark matter. I feel like rather than try to prove dark matter, thus making us right, we should be searching for if and where we went wrong.

Actually your wrong rako because galaxies do have enough mass to hold all the stars in them its the problem of why all the stars are rotating around in a galaxy all at the same speed. Our solar system is not an example because all the planets moves at different speeds by where their location is from distance from the sun. Our star and every other star in our galaxy is moving at the same speed rotating around the center of our galaxy. So scientist had to come up with the conclusion that the mass of our galaxy has to spread out through our galaxy and from equations that isn't possible with the stars having little mass compared to how much mass is towards the center of our galaxy. So dark matter can exist but we cant prove it exist. We have good reasons on why we think it exist.

Thats why it's called 'dark matter'.

Why would that be a more helpful course of action?

Lol, missed something, you don't say "I think", this sub-forum isn't about your own personal opinion.
