Does Pirating music actually help the artist?

They dont make that much money from selling CDs in the first place, the stores and other middlemen get most of it. They make their money from doing gigs and shows and stuff. So i say pirate away.

What I'm trying to ask is whether or not Pirating actually helps the artist by spreading his music faster.

So you show your friends and they show their friends and on and on until the person if very popular, but if everyone were to download it it would hurt the artist because stores and middlemen would stop buying from them because they can't sell the discs they already have, then they would promote other artists. If only one person downloaded it, but the rest buy it, then it would help.

but if he makes no money off the sale of the music, you would reason "Oh, if he wants to make more music which I love, I need to donate!"

Usually I'll pirate the album, then if I think they deserve it (or I think they're really awesome) I'll buy the album. Albums come with posters anyway. Or, for the bands I listen to.

Wow, you're a bunch of whitehatted faggots, making up excuses.

Just fucking pirate shit. Those artists shouldn't whine, they've got loads of money.

I missed out on another million! Now I can't buy that golden toilet I wanted!

Shut the fuck and start paying taxes, you faggot.

You're an idiot if you think every musician/game developer is rolling in cash. Though you're also an idiot if you think a musician gets any real money from album sales, so your point is moot either way.

"Stores and middlemen" don't buy CDs from the artists. The pressing, packaging, shipping and distribution are all lumped together with the "middlemen", and those costs are paid for ahead of time by the label. A massive percentage of music sales are digital now, though, so whatever effect piracy has on physical sales isn't all that significant. Plus the demographic of people who buy physical CDs rather than ordering them online/buying digital downloads are different from the piracy-inclined demographics.

If a group's album fails to sell, the label is going to be a lot less confident in investing any real money in marketing or distributing any future releases -- it can still do a lot of damage to an artist.

I don't see how piracy can help the artist. They're not making any money from it.

I see! As long as they're rich, we can steal money from them. So that means we can hack into their back account and take their money. They're rich anyways. Seriously, this is a weak excuse. A reason why they are rich is because we support them by buying their music.

Hahaha bullshit. I don't give a fuck about anyone that makes over a million dollars a year and whines because he lost a few thousand due to piracy.

Suck my balls faggot, there are worse problems in the world.

You're not even debating any more. You're just whining(ironically) and disagreeing just because you disagree.

I'm not whining and I'm not disagreeing simply to disagree.

I've given you a fair point. Those people make millions of dollars a year. And we're the bad guys for downloading some music? Hell no. They're not going bankrupt or anything. Hell, the music industry is bigger than it ever was in the history of mankind.
Piracy isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be and others trying to moralize over this is ridiculous. Make those rich cocksuckers pay taxes, then I'll moralize with them.
