IRC is an acronym that stands for "Internet Relay Chat", and has been a preferred method of internet chatting for a very long time. This guide is intended to help you connect to the Stickpage IRC channel, and provide a few tips and tricks for IRC use.

Part 1: The IRC client

In order to connect to the Stickpage IRC channel, you must first have a program called an "IRC client" that allows you to do this. You have a lot of options:

mIRC

- mIRC is one of the most popular IRC clients, but can be very difficult to use if you're just beginning.

- It is free for a limited amount of time, and then you are expected to pay a one time fee for the program

Download here

XChat

- Much simpler, user friendly interface

- Less capable than other IRC clients

- Free

Download here

Chatzilla

- Another popular client, the difference is that this client is strictly for use with firefox as an add-on

- Nice, clean, web-like interface

- Powerful scripting capabilities

- user friendly

- completely customizable

- free

Download here

Mibbit

- Browser based

- No downloads or installation

- VERY limited usability

- User friendly

I wont be including mibbit in any other steps of the guide, mainly because Adelais (the server Stickpage IRC is hosted on) does not like users using mibbit, and also because if you understand how to connect to other IRC clients, mibbit is a breeze.

Mobile

- There are IRC clients for smartphones as well. These wont be covered in other steps, but if you understand how to connect on PC based IRC clients, it should be simple to do on the phone

- For android, notable IRC clients are andChat, androIRC, yaaic, and others as well.

Part 2: Connecting to the server and channel

mIRC

Once you've installed and opened mIRC, you'll see this view:

Image

Enter in your nickname, and an alternative nickname in case your preferred nickname is already in use. Then, on the left hand tree menu, click "servers" under "connect"

Image

Click on "add", the following menu should pop up. Enter in "Adelais" for the description, and put irc.adelais.net in the IRC server box. The rest of the fields you don't need to edit

Image

After you have done this, "Adelais" should be highlighted at the bottom of the list. If it is not highlighted, highlight it and press "select". This should bring you back to the "Connect" menu, where you will press "Connect".

This should bring you to the following set-up:

Image

From here, enter #stickpage into the text box at the top (like below), and press "Join"

Image

You are now connected! Enjoy.

XChat

After you've installed and opened XChat, the following box should pop up:

Image

Fill in the nick-name field as you want it, and then press "Add". Double-click the "New Server" and rename it to "Adelais".

Image

Then, with "Adelais" selected, press "Edit".

Image

From here, double click "newserver/6667" and in it's place type "irc.adelais.net".

Image

From here you can choose to Auto-connect to this server at start up, which is usually preferred.

Once you're finished, press "close" and then select adelais from the list, and click "Connect" at the bottom right of the window, which will bring up the following:

Image

Enter in #stickpage in the "Join this channel" text box, and press "ok".

You are now connected! Enjoy!

Part 3: Nickname registration and IRC commands

- Under construction

I'll be adding more to this guide when I have more time, what I have now is more than enough to get you started and chatting in stickpage IRC. Happy chatting!

http://xat.com/ is another good one.

Stickpage itself used this one: http://xat.com/stickpage

And I could never pass up the chance to advertise my own, so here is mine: http://xat.com/TrueMortal

We already have a new IRC channel on Rizon. Before that, we had one on quakenet that was in use for years and years and years. I dunno why you've decided to use a new server

Well it won't hurt, right? It's not like anyone went to that server anyway.

We've decided because it was the one we've been on for years and years. It also currently now has roughly 40 users online. Once we finally get the FA channel members fully migrated we should hold a solid 55-65 users. From there, once we get all of stickpage on board we could easily double that.

Around how many active forum members do you expect to migrate from FA onto this forum?

Once the bulk is over here they will have no choice but to move over anyway.

Since when does xChat cost money? Bloody hell.

I'll just install mIRC for now.

Hello I've been having problems with entering xchat, and mIRC. I changed my internet provider and now it wont let me log in, I've never had this problem before, about 2 weeks ago it kept giving me this message:

*** Could not resolve your hostname: Domain name not found; using your IP address instead.

Now it wont even give me that message and just says "*** Looking up your hostname..." and doesn't connect...
Any help would be nice, Please ^-^

For mac users, I'd recommend using Colloquy as many of the IRC clients listed are not for Mac OS, and I have had some problems with chatzilla. It's also really easy to use.

OS Lion Download
Snow Leopard and Earlier Download

For snow leopard, use the colloquy 2.4 download at the above link (Or 2.3 if that's giving you problems.) The connection process is very similar to xchat or mIRC.

I have been trying to join the IRC channel but it does not seem to work.

The error message that it get is:
You are banned from the channel #Stickpage

At first I thought this was a problem with my nick not being registered but I have done that, and identified myself, yet it still tells me I'm banned.
If anyone can give me an answer that would be lovely. :)

Edit: Nevermind, solved this.

Also, xChat has never been free, however someone made a clone of it a long time ago and that's what everyone has been using :)
