so i skimmed through AAAAAAAAAALLLLL 4 pages and figured that my response is along the lines of some other people's responses. nothing complex really, just some small points:
1) the draft isn't in effect at the moment
let's say it is
if you are a person of faith for a certain amount of time and people can attest to your religiousness, you can opt out of the draft due to religious conflicts
2) "i am religious, in the military (draft or otherwise,) but want to adhere to the commandment"
you do not have to be infantry or anything -- you can opt to be a mechanic, field medic, etc
man i'm kind of disappointed that i can't format my posts like an outline or something

If people are to be going abrupt into getting the point of things, just remember that mods are watching. e___e Anyways...
I'm a Christian. Everything that involves hate towards God is ok, but just remember : If Heaven and Hell does exist, you'll regret your disbelief.
EDIT : Really don't know what the fuck I was just typing, but it just sounds right.

Quote from FizzysodaSooooo, stoning your child to death is not murder?
You forgot to bring up the commandment about honoring your parents.
People back in the day were dumb and took things to extremes, what do you expect from a book written by these men?
Quote from Dronebut god has ended the lives of thousands of people.
i was saying he can do that though and we have no right to argue with him because he is a perfect being and so, everything he does is perfect.
like the story of job.
No, the story of Job is different. God was testing his faith in the face of adversity and Job prevailed.
If you are an actual Christian and for whatever purpose you died tomorrow, you would see it as a blessing because you were part of God's plan.
If you're a sinner and God kills you, you go to hell like you would deserve. If you're a man of God and he ends your life early, you wouldn't complain, because you would begin your life in eternal salvation in paradise.
This argument is stupid.
As far as killing for killing for ones country, I very seriously doubt that God would turn away from you for this.
You're defending God's children from the people that would otherwise kill them. You would still most certainly have to repent for your sins and ask for forgiveness because regardless taking away the gift of life is just not cool.

Oh, fuck you. Now I have to chime in here, because this is just ridiculous.
I live a fairly sin-free life. I don't treat people like shit, I'm rather polite and courteous in general and I make an active effort to avoid being a negative aspect of anyone's lives. I'm not greedy, not selfish, I don't steal, murder or covet your neighbor's wife. Hell, I honor the sabbath by spending every weekend stoned off my ass and not doing a single fucking thing. You ever work on a sunday? You're probably a bigger sinner than I am.
Not to gloat, I'm not perfect. But I was raised christian. We went to church. I went to 2 years of bible confirmation classes, went to sermons, went to church outings and functions. I just couldn't believe the stories. It never clicked. I've never once felt the presence of a god, and it scared the hell out of me once I realized that I'm actually unable to believe in him. Cue the 5 year existential crisis that ended in a several-month long major depressive episode as I tried to mentally accept the abysmal void that had replaced whatever I thought might be my afterlife.
I don't believe in God but that isn't stopping me from being a good person. My awareness of how fucking lucky we are to be alive in the first place means I don't want to ruin the experience for anyone else. "Don't be an ass" is my one fucking commandment and I do better at following it than virtually everyone I encounter on a daily basis.
Long story short, if your God would send me to hell because I can't believe in him, despite trying my best to be a good person, then I guess I'm going to hell. Any god who would do that isn't one I want to have anything to do with.

If you use the logical reason skills God gave you and don't blindly believe a story that appears ridiculous (or believe the wrong one), then you get to be tortured for eternity for no purpose other than sheer misery and God's love of suffering.
god's perfect, flawless plan

Taking this as a thought experiment:
Generally any command can be overruled by a later command. If God instructs you to break one of the commandments then there is no reason not to. Therefore if you can interpret anything as being a command from God to join the army it is as legitimate as anything else.
But let's say you've looked as hard as you can and even seriously stretching the definition of "sign" to breaking point you can't see anything instructing you to kill. In that case there are still a few things you can do to justify your actions. Jesus said that "love thy neighbour as yourself" overrules any and all the commandments, so you can start by arguing that your objective should be to do the most loving thing possible for humanity as a whole. If that means killing someone for the greater good then so be it. Or you could interpret "neighbour" as being only people relatively near to you in which case it becomes even easier - you only need to do what's best for your country and that's quite possibly military service.
In Britain we have a default fallback position that the monarch has been appointed by God, and therefore anything they command is right by definition. That authority may be lent to parliament but the principle holds. If the government sends us to war then it is by God's will. Americans have, theoretically, separation of church and state, but that doesn't mean you can't say God wants you to go to war. Maybe you can reason that the US is the only real Christian country left (except perhaps Vatican City) so you act in the name of God. Perhaps you could argue that your leaders are obviously smarter than you or they wouldn't be leaders, so they must have a better understanding of scripture than you. Hobbes argued that God placed man in a state of nature, the only way out of which was to place authority and absolute power in some kind of sovereign (or system: oligarchy/democracy) so God must will you to do so and be commanded. If the sovereign commands you to kill then it is right that you do so. Or maybe you could argue that since God is all powerful he would stop you if what you were doing was wrong. You could pray first and ask him to defy your free will just this once. There are lots of ways to justify killing.
Disclaimer: I know that's all bullshit. I'm an atheist too.
