For some reason, that little teaser at the end of the last episode really enticed me, especially with Kanami. That's actually what I thought they were going with with Martin Zigmar, he has this air about him that implied that he was working with/using the mainland while keeping his objectives mysterious. That said, I thought him dying to awaken Ryuhou's power to defeat our villain was a tad cliche, but I liked it, so introducing the villain your way would have been amazing. It would have hit so many birds with one stone, fleshing out the mainland as something like SEELE would have been really interesting.
How do you think the show would have been if it was two seasons, each being 26 eps long? I think ending the first season just after Kazuma and Ryuhou go missing could have been really good, and I really think they had enough content to fill another season. Though it would have made the show a lot slower and probably less action packed.

I think the show has enough ideas in it's 23 episodes that don't get fully flushed out. It could probably support another half a season on that alone. Plus they could've added in more native alter battles, I would've made a ton of other alter users for Ryohou and Kazuma fight. Before their rivalry starts. So like, from both of their perspectives. More of Ryohou in HOLY and Kazuma struggling to survive in a world where he doesn't fit in. It would've added a lot more impact to Holy in general. Showing how both Ryohou and Kazuma have to fight for what's right from both sides of the same coin. And on the subject of story lines that could've been more well flushed out...

Yeah, that's pretty much how Martin explains it, but I was never 100% sure if needed Ryuhou's alter so it could live (because it was suffering), or if it attacked him to get stronger but left early because it was suffocating. If it did attack him to get stronger, what aspect of attacking an alter user makes and alter being stronger? In the forest it turned all those animals and stuff into alter, so why couldn't it when it first met Ryuhou? Did it, and it just decided it wasn't worth fighting someone who didn't have a developed alter ability? Argh, to many questions, not enough time!

This aspect of the plot could've REALLY used some more clarification. I'm not entirely certain myself. Part of the problem it seems is that the alter being has no way of communicating it's motives to us, or anything else for that matter. It's like if a man with no name, no home and no one knew raided a mall with an assault weapon trying to hunt one person down, then after killing everyone around deciding to spare that one person. There's not even a house that the police can search for motives. We'll never be able to clearly understand why he did what he did. I totally feel your frustration. Unfortunately it's one of the shows greatest boons and flaws. Sometimes everything was a little too mystifying, in this instance it's a pain. But speaking of mystifying scenes that worked flawlessly...

And that scene was amazing, it hit all the feels. Kazuma telling him "The least you can do is cry for her" and boom, all the restraints are off, and Kazuma's single tear as he reminisces about everyone's sacrifices. Gold. I also got a similar feeling, I don't think it was ever said, or even hinted at, but personally I got a 'guardian angel' vibe from the whole scene, and I think I'm glad they left it open like that.

You hit the nail on the head. The only thing I can think to say about it is.

All in all it was one of the best scenes of the show

One of the small gripes I have about the character designs changing was that it didn't happen for some many other characters. I mean Elion was doing a hectic amount of surveillance, sure he never upgraded his power, but it would have been a nice touch, but I digress.
Usually I dislike when insanely strong opponents don't lead with their strongest moves, but them doing it this way made me go all nostalgic for events I'd seen only a week beforehand lol, it reminded me of all their encounters and it was just great. It just felt so fitting, they had grown a grudging respect for each other to the point where they could work together against the mainland, but as soon as they were done it was time for "unfinished business", argh! it's exactly what I wanted! When they only had enough strength to cover their fists with alter power, and collapsed afterwards, that raised fist (it was Kazuma's right?), for as anticlimactic as the main antagonist was the show redeemed itself and then raised it with the ending.

There's a few more things I want to talk about.

There's one character we've totally missed. A character we somehow glanced over. A simple character with humble beginnings. A character who in their own way really made quite the impact on more than one occasion.

I'll give you one hint.

I feel that showing them dealing with actual problem native alters and criminals could have done worlds of good for Ryuhou's character, because for most of the series HOLY seemed to be blatantly oppressing the Inners which made Ryuhou's rather narrow minded ideals of justice feel jarring, and often made him seem arrogant, self-righteous, kinda racist, and a tad hypocritical. So taking those few episodes could have solidified HOLY as a unit and really improved the rivalry.

One of the most potent feels I got from that scene was his regret for not expressing his love for her. Kinda like an OH FUCK I DIDN'T CONSIDER THAT MY SELFISHNESS WOULD LEAD TO YOU DYING! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- Maybe I got that feel so hard, because I felt like he should've been giving his love to the talented, useful, protect him at any cost type of woman who would unconditionally love him back. And it's not like he even gave it up for Mimori too, he must be gay, seriously. What an idiot, so frustrating.

All in all it was one of the best scenes of the show

What about Kazuma's best friend? His death and how every episode he was in his car got wrecked.
I liked how Ryohou was Kazuma's drive, like everytime he thought he couldn't make it, that he was going to die he'd think of Ryohou. Because it meant losing to that opponent meant he would never get to beat Ryohou, so instead of just the defeat of the one opponent it was like he was losing to Ryohou himself and he refused that.
How about that scene where Kazuma was in HOLY's crazy fucking turbulence machine and after he was ran through the ringer a time or two you got to see his face on the monitor, cracking a determined grin?

I usually like a silent character, it was one of the coolest things about Gungrave, but I feel like the Crystal dude could have been improved if there was someway of having him express himself. Something as simple as Kanami having a dream about how it's feeling or what it intends to do would have been cool, even if it was something left really open, deliberately vague, or better yet, a misunderstanding. But having him be more than just a catalyst for Ryuhou's strength could have really added to their final confrontation.

I totally agree, and I felt like a lot of that came from him restraining himself way to much, and being to focused on revenge that he let so much slip by him. I mean he wasn't oblivious, she flat out told him she wanted to be lovers! But apparently he still prefers chasing Kazuma over chasing the babe in a mini skirt who is asking for his D...
I was a little nervous in that scene though, up until that point I thought the voice actor had been kind of stiff (justifiably so, because of the character), but I was pleasantly surprised as I was hit with a wave of emotion and feels.

To be honest, I really didn't like the way Kimishima dies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I actually didn't see him getting injured. I know he was being shot at and all but until he collapsed and Kazuma started freaking out, I didn't even know something was wrong... So instead of getting an emotional moment, I got a plot point that felt really tacked on just to justify Kazuma going insane and raping HOLY. But I really liked the dude, despite being into some shady work, he really felt like a nice guy, who cared for his friends, and like Kanami, was strong in his own way despite being an average guy.
I can't remember the exact quote, something along the lines of "he flipped a switch on inside me", really is the best way of describing the majority of their relationship. And that scene when he's smiling just perfectly sums up just how prideful, stubborn, and defiant he is (that scene actually reminded me of a scene from a movie called The Last King of Scotland, if you've seen it, you'll hopefully know which one lol). And those attributes where exactly why Unkei's story was doomed from the start, mutual respect/friendship? Fuck that.

I have mixed feelings here. Firstly his character really reminded me of The Hulk, and that was even before he was reduced to one word. And I generally liked Biff a lot, and for some reason I kinda thought he represented a lot of the alter users. But I didn't like how he was brought down to a mindless puppet, or at least I don't think it was pulled off quite right. I liked how Ayase was being manipulated and how she fought for her beliefs/little brother, but I feel bad Biff didn't get similar treatment. But I do understand why they did it, and here's where I don't think they pulled it off right. They needed to really hit the idea of struggling to be free, and they needed to hit it earlier, having Biff show signs of fighting back against the mind control when he was using that village as a hostage or when he stole Kanami could have been a good start. Then if Biff and Kazuma's fights drilled in Kazuma's ideals about being free and doing whatever he wanted while Biff struggled against Mujo, I think his death could have had such a greater impact.

All that said, seeing his face as he slowly fell down really punched me in the ovaries. I just didn't see it coming, and it was a really nice 'fuck you' to the mainland.

Did you miss the scene where Kimishima is doing the best he can to run in his car with the machine guns shooting a him? During that scene one of the bullets shoot through his car seat and out of his body. And he let's out a disappointed "Oh really?" like he knew he wasn't going to survive the wound the second he got it. Like a "So that's how it is?". I thought it was beautiful how his last moments were literally watching Kazuma shine. Maybe you should rewatch that scene more closely.

I was being facetious about the hammer guy. It made me laugh how all he could do was scream hammer at the top of his lungs. His death was really sad though.

The scene with the monsters basically got me sold here. I can rewatch that scene all night and not get tired of the animation. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.

I think Bones are really going all out with the animation, which means if this bombs their probs going to be in a tough position...

It's by the same director, so it makes sense. Although I think the action is going to be nothing similar to Bebop's, it might follow the same 'rule of cool', but it's going to be horrendously over the top. So far the comedy reminds me of that episode of Bebop you said you liked, which is good, but I hope they keep doing the snarky narrator and breaking the 4th wall lol.

I heard a fair few people found at least the first half to be really boring, and to be honest, I can see where there coming from. The first two arcs feel like they're there to set up the finale, so while stuff happens, they feel a bit slow. But the tidbits of information and hits they drop throughout the start really intrigued me, and I really liked the world building. But it definitely isn't a show for everyone, but I'll ask that if you do pick it up again; keep an open mind in episode 8, in the context of the show, it fits perfectly.

But there are a fair few movies that I'm keen for (at least they look good on paper atm):
Giovanni no Shima
Harmonie
Kuro no Sumika-Chronus-
Psycho-pass
Sakura no Ondo (only because it's ufotable). But it'll probs be 2015 before I see most of these...

I'm pretty sure Miyazaki's the orignial creator, director, and screenwriter for Wind Rises. You might be thinking of When Marnie was There, which should be the next film after Wind Rises.
