View Profile The eye can describe things moving with 24 different frames per second as motion.
It can do it with 20 as well. And 18. And 22. And plenty of others. There's no universal frame rate the eye perceives as fluid motion.

View Profile I started up with 17.5 FPS, then sticked to 20-22.
Used to animate at 30 FPS, but was failing horribly. Now I animate mostly at 24 or 25 FPS.

View Profile Saw a 60fps animation once, and I have to say it was the smoothest thing I've ever seen. But I stick to 16.67fps because it's all pivot can really do.
12fps is the lowest I've seen a good animation at.

View Profile For me, I would animate at 18 FPS if I were to be animating a pretty tiring animation, like my WIP animation, Hellyah.
Most collabs animate at 24 or 25 FPS. I would use that too for joints, tests, or others.
I would animate 30 FPS if it were to be a full length competition-genre animation like OUTBalanced. Or I would use 30 FPS for tests and others.

60fps? I think there used to be a collaboration over on FA where you had to make an 80fps animation! XD
(It died btw)

View Profile when it comes to 2D animation, I honestly feel that there is no need to ever go above 24 fps. my standard fps is 20, but I use 24 all the time for collabs, and I even go as low as 18 from time to time.

View Profile I'd suggest 24 for average stickfiguring, 30 for single framing type animation, 12 for full body, and 120 for everyone to think you do drugs while animating...

66fps by Cronos:

I swear he made another which was longer and better. With a red stick, if I recall correctly. But I assume it was lost in the forum reboot.

View Profile Like I say, when you get above the rate the human eye can process it becomes essentially like watching a guy move irl. Bit it is a lot of effort to animate. I'll PM Cronos and see if he has the one I'm thinking of.
