Scientifically it is believed that you just aren't. Brain activity will cease after a few minutes, and so will your existence. In other words, you won't be able to hear yourself think, you can't see light through your eye lids. Fear of death is induced by the fear of what comes afterwards, which is non existence. We, as humans all want to continue existing, so it is only natural to conjure up the idea that there is an afterlife so that we feel more secure about the future as everyday brings us closer to death.

In a religious point of view, you, like what has already been stated, go to hell or heaven as a spirit. In a scientific point of view, we are just complex temporary organic creatures that stops functioning and decays into the basic materials it is made of after a certain time that is affected by both natural and unnatural causes. In simpler words you break down into part of the earth. The food you are eating may contain particles from a dead human that decomposed, got used by plants, and now you are eating that plant. This also leads us to the idea that all living things are technically cannibals, but that needs a thread of it's own.

As for what it's like after we die, it's like how things were before you were born. You have no consciousness to experience anything with after your brain stops functioning.
