How do you sound bad playing a harmonica?
I mean, you could play a harmonica that's in the wrong key and sound bad, but you just have to make sure your harmonica is in the correct key, whether it be major or minor. Shouldn't sound bad unless you're landing on modal notes rather than the root, which won't sound terribly bad unless you go for locrian.

Well it's hard to explain.
It's a lot based on timing and hitting the proper combination of notes/ bending notes. The right tempo and keeping internal rhythm. It's actually a very difficult instrument to play.
Trust me, everyone sounds awful starting out on harmonica.

But that sounds more like developing your musical ear rather than physically learning to do it. I'm doubtful the physical aspects of learning to play the harmonica are as hard as a trumpet or a piano.

You don't have the ability to hit notes out of key, so you don't have to learn scales or even relative music theory to play well. I just don't see how it's a difficult instrument.

I never learned musical theory or any scales to learn to play piano, I learned by feeling. Regardlessly.
Like I said it's hard to explain, all I can say is pick up a harmonica in C or A and just start playing. It's not so easy as it seems.
Also you can effect the note, by drawing or blowing power, bending style and even the tone of your voice can effect it.

By learning by feel on the piano, you had to at some point teach yourself some form of music theory. Mostlikely it was mentally by developing your inner ear and hearing thus knowing what notes should come next. You taught yourself in your head what notes should come next. You can probably do basic chord progressions too, but I'm doubtful you add many extensions to the chords beyond 7s and 9s, just because our ears tend to not grab extensions as easily beyond that. I could always be wrong though. Some people are prodigies.

I sometimes play harmonica when I get bluesy on guitar. I also play flute, and there's no way the two instruments compare, flute's harder hands down, but I believe flute's 10 times easier than guitar. Maybe I'm just the odd musician out.

EDIT: I might be disregarding the fact that I developed my inner ear playing other instruments...

I think flute's harder than piano and guitar, I can't even begin to play that shit.
Yeah, usually people have a very hard time with harmonica I've notices. What songs can you play?

You haven't played classical guitar with complex syncopation and polyrhythms/polymeters. Doesn't even compare.

I can usually play anything by ear, I'm not a memory musician and I was trained in soul fege so I can hear something and usually play it right back for you. If I hear something really simple, I can play it without thinking if it's a harmonica, because I don't have to think about scale positions. I usually just use it to fuck around at parties. I'll play pop songs on guitar and play the melodies on top with a harmonica.

Oh oh, I got another one.
Dinosaurs, my generation thought dinosaurs were the shit. Don't know about all these new kids but I love em.
Plus they have more history than us humans do, they helped shape the earth into what it is.
